INDONESIA is quickly becoming a favourite holiday destination for Malaysians as the stronger Ringgit boosts spending power against the rupiah.
According to checks by Utusan Malaysia, RM1,000 can now fetch around 4.4 million to 4.5 million rupiah, among the lowest exchange rates seen in the past decade.
The amount is enough to cover basic expenses for a budget traveller for at least five days in cities such as Yogyakarta, Bandung and Surabaya, excluding flights.
Flight fares remain relatively affordable, with one-way tickets from Kuala Lumpur starting from about RM250 to Jakarta and RM280 to Bali on selected dates.
However, prices can climb to between RM700 and RM1,000 depending on season, demand, baggage and airline promotions.
According to Glory Travel and Tours Sdn Bhd manager Muhammad Ikmal Aiman Abdul Rahim, more Malaysians are now eyeing Indonesia because of the favourable exchange rate.
“Besides natural attractions and cultural experiences, lower spending costs such as accommodation, food, activities and shopping are indeed among the main reasons Malaysians choose Indonesia.
“Tourists are now more inclined to look for destinations that offer quality experiences at more worthwhile costs,” he said.
Ikmal said the stronger ringgit is most noticeable through cheaper spending on food, transport, activities and shopping, giving travellers bigger overall savings throughout their holidays.
He added the stronger Ringgit and weaker rupiah are expected to boost short-term travel demand to Indonesia, which could remain a top choice for Malaysians if costs and flight access stay competitive.
