PUTRAJAYA — The government will give due consideration to the nomination of conservative commentator and writer Nick Adams (picture) as the new United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the appointment must go through the proper process and that it is still too early to comment further.

Anwar added that the consideration would also take into account the strong bilateral relations between the two countries. 

“The government will of course give it due consideration while also maintaining the good relations between Malaysia and the US,” he told reporters after performing Friday prayers at Surau Istiqlal here today. 

International media previously reported that US President Donald Trump had nominated Adams — an Australian-born conservative political commentator who is now a US citizen — as the US Ambassador to Malaysia.

MALAYSIANS are rejecting the nomination of Nick Adams as the next US ambassador to Malaysia, citing his controversial background.

Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) international bureau chief Arief Izuadin Ahmad Jefferi said the nomination was inappropriate due to Adams’ links to extreme political views and rhetoric that promotes division.

His nomination had also sparked online debate, with many questioning the motives behind it following widespread criticism over his personality and past statements, which were described as Islamophobic, sexist and misogynistic.

In response, AMK will hold a demonstration outside the US Embassy this Friday. Deputy chief Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim said the protest will involve leaders from Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties and NGOs.

“A memorandum of protest will be submitted to the embassy during the demonstration this Friday,” he said.

Meanwhile, DAP central executive committee member Kasthuri Patto questioned Adams’ ability to serve as a credible envoy, saying Malaysia deserves someone more qualified and committed to international cooperation.

She said Adams appeared incapable of carrying out his duties fairly and inclusively in a country as rich in cultural, ethnic and religious diversity as Malaysia.

“Is he truly able to embody these values in his role as US ambassador to Malaysia, or is he merely a representative of a narrow and biased ideology?

“Malaysia and the US have long enjoyed strong ties in areas such as trade, cultural exchange, education, healthcare, artificial intelligence (AI) and human rights.

“These ties must be preserved and strengthened through the appointment of ambassadors who are genuinely qualified and committed to the spirit of international cooperation,” she said. — TMR

PUTRAJAYA — The Cabinet has yet to receive an official memorandum from Wisma Putra regarding the reported nomination of conservative commentator and author, Nick Adams (picture), as the next United States Ambassador to Malaysia, says the MADANI Government spokesperson, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said that in such matters, it is standard procedure for the Cabinet to receive a formal memorandum from the Foreign Ministry on any new ambassadorial or diplomatic appointment to Malaysia.

“As of now, the matter has not been brought to the Cabinet’s attention. It may be presented once we receive further updates, but at this point, it has yet to reach the Cabinet,” he told reporters after presenting appointment letters to the founding board members of the Malaysian Media Council today.

Asked whether Malaysia has the right to reject Adams’ appointment, Fahmi pointed to diplomatic norms.

“In diplomacy, there is a concept known as ‘agrément’, where the host country must first accept the nominee. The same applies in reverse — when Malaysia appoints its envoys abroad, approval from the host nation is also required,” he explained.

The nomination has sparked debate, with former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin stating that Malaysia has every right to reject Adams’ appointment, citing Article 4 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations which stipulates that a receiving state may refuse any diplomatic envoy without having to justify.

Under diplomatic protocol, no country may send an ambassador without the host nation’s prior consent, which is a key principle in international relations. — BERNAMA
