JOHOR BAHRU — Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he intends to meet UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to discuss current political developments concerning the next Johor State Election.

The Prime Minister said he hoped the discussion could be held harmoniously for the mutual benefit of both parties.

“I hope that, although the announcement has been made (by Johor BN chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi yesterday), I will meet the UMNO president and negotiate properly. Why should we fight over it? Where we were lacking, we have helped a lot, helped everyone.

“If we fight, those below will quarrel too… we must make efforts. What is important is our effort to help the people,” he said when speaking at the Prime Minister’s Meet-the-People Programme with Johoreans at the open hall of the Taman Desa Mutiara People’s Housing Programme (PPR) here today.

He was commenting on Onn Hafiz’s statement yesterday that UMNO and Barisan Nasional were prepared to contest all 56 Johor state seats in the upcoming state election after receiving the approval of the party leadership.

Meanwhile, Anwar also urged voters to give strong support to PH candidates should the coalition contest in the election.

He also reminded all political leaders to consistently go to the ground and engage with the people, instead of appearing only during election season.

Anwar said sincerity in serving the people was important and leaders should not “compete” to contribute only when polling day approached. –BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU — PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he is not following the latest political developments involving two former senior party leaders, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

“I am not following,” he said briefly after attending the Prime Minister’s Goodwill Programme with the People at Taman Desa Mutiara People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Tebrau here today.

He said this when asked to comment on the decision of the former deputy president and former vice resident of PKR on reportedly taking over a political party known as Parti Bersama Malaysia or Malaysian United Party (MUP).

MUP is a political party registered on Dec 2, 2016 in Penang.

Earlier, Rafizi and Nik Nazmi announced their latest political direction at a function in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, besides announcing their exit from PKR and vacating their respective parliamentary seats effective tomorrow.

Rafizi, who is the Pandan Member of Parliament, said he and Nik Nazmi, the Setiawangsa Member of Parliament, will write a letter regarding the decision to the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul tomorrow. — BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hinted at the possibility of dissolving Parliament to hold the 16th general election (GE16) early if the coalition partners in the Unity Government continue to act to undermine political stability.

Anwar, who is also the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said the stance was taken following the actions of UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) to contest all seats in Johor.

Anwar said if the coalition partners choose to ‘fight’ and break ties, he would not hesitate to return the mandate to the people to determine the future of the country’s leadership.

“In fact, in the near future I have to call the PH leadership to negotiate. Not only in these states, but we have to think seriously. If this is how we are compartmentalizing and breaking ties within the government, is it possible that we will choose to hold a general election nationwide?” he said.

He said this when delivering his message at the culmination of PH 2026 Convention at Johor Persada International Convention Centre, here today.

Anwar said that although the final decision on the date of GE is the Prime Minister’s prerogative, he will still hold discussions with PH leadership before any drastic steps are taken.

He also gave a stern warning that PH is ready to field candidates in all seats in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Melaka, Penang and Pahang if political negotiations reach a deadlock.

“If this is their choice, PH will contest in all areas in the state of Johor, in Negeri Sembilan, all areas… and we will monitor everything. I will discuss (with) my friends, are we ready to do it immediately (GE)?” he said.

However, the Prime Minister said that he still prioritises a patient approach and wants to save the country through political stability to ensure that the country’s economic prosperity continues to be maintained.

“But as I said earlier, if those who start threatening, we will respond firmly. If they negotiate well, we are good, patient, wise people and want to save this country,” he said.

Therefore, he called on the entire PH machinery to be on standby and not to be afraid if they have to face a series of elections in the near future in order to defend the party’s principles of struggle. –BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU — The development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is proof of the effectiveness of the MADANI Government’s strategy in translating economic prosperity into direct benefits for the state and its people.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the unique project, resulting from cooperation between the two countries, has successfully attracted major investments, accounting for 66 per cent of Johor’s total investments over the past year.

He said to support the growth of the economic region, the government is placing strong emphasis on connectivity and mobility at the country’s entry points to ensure it is no longer constrained by outdated management systems.

“We are replacing outdated border management systems, expediting procurement programmes, building new systems, and putting in place the most advanced infrastructure. We are now just awaiting their phased implementation,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the PH Convention 2026 at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here today.

Saifuddin Nasution, who is also Home Minister, said efforts to address congestion at the Johor Causeway, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar are now a priority for the Cabinet committee to ensure the smooth movement of people and goods.

“The Johor-Singapore entry point is currently among the busiest in the world, so we can no longer be bound by outdated systems or old methods of managing it,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said Johor was chosen as the venue for the convention to reinvigorate the coalition machinery, as the state is among those expected to face elections in the near future.

He added that all the issues and messages raised by delegates during the convention would serve as a guide for the Presidential Council in determining the coalition’s strategy and political direction.

He also reminded party machinery to play an active role in conveying accurate information about government policies to the public to prevent any gap between the administration’s achievements and understanding at the grassroots level. — BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU — Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Chow Kon Yeow has reminded the coaliton not to be lulled into complacency by its dominance in the state over the past two decades, but instead to prepare for a tougher fight in the 16th General Election (GE16).

The Penang Chief Minister said the country’s political landscape has changed drastically, with voter sentiment shifting, as seen in the recent election results in Sabah.

“In Sabah, we can observe to some extent how easily voter sentiment can change, and although elected representatives have long served the people, that is no guarantee of retaining victory in their respective seats.

“Today, people want to see not just slogans, but leadership that can bring stability, development and confidence in the future of the state,” he said when delivering his speech at the PH 2026 Convention at the Persada International Convention Centre here today.

In line with this shift in political sentiment, Chow said he has chosen to practise responsible politics rather than popularity politics, despite being in his final term as Chief Minister.

He said he could have taken the easy route by postponing difficult decisions to preserve political popularity, but instead chose to continue implementing key policies to ensure the state’s financial position and infrastructure development remain strong.

“Some have said I could choose comfortable politics (since this is my final term). But I did not choose that path. I chose to continue with decisions I believe are important for Penang’s future, even if they may cause short-term dissatisfaction,” he said.

He also cautioned that Perikatan Nasional (PN) is intensifying efforts to expand its influence in Penang, particularly through PAS and Gerakan, focusing on Malay-majority areas in Seberang Perai and Balik Pulau.

He said PN is attempting to build political momentum by highlighting local issues such as the cost of living, water tariffs, land tax and sentiments related to “urban elites” in order to sway public support in the state.

“The next general election is not just about who campaigns the hardest. It is about who the people trust to lead when times are difficult.

“This state needs mature, stable leadership that is willing to make decisions for the people’s future, even if it involves taking political risks,” he said.

Chow also touched on the importance of strengthening PH-Barisan Nasional cooperation under the Unity Government framework, as well as preparing future leadership succession beyond the Chief Minister’s tenure to ensure continued political stability in the state.

Held under the theme “Tekad MADANI, Harapan Rakyat” (MADANI Resolve, People’s Hope), the PH 2026 Convention gathered about 5,000 delegates and leaders from across the country.

Prime Minister and PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to deliver the keynote address and officiate at the convention this afternoon.

Among the leaders expected to speak are DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and PH secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. — BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU — Johor Pakatan Harapan (PH) today announced that it will contest all 56 state constituency seats in the upcoming state election.

State PH chairman Aminolhuda Hassan (picture) said the decision was made after Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi stated that the coalition would contest all state seats yesterday.

“The Johor Menteri Besar has stated that state BN will contest 56 seats, so Johor PH will also contest all 56 seats – they have made their position clear.

“Although some have questioned why we would contest against our own allies, it is because they made the declaration, so we (PH) are responding,” he said.

He said this while speaking on behalf of Johor PH delegates at the PH Convention 2026 held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here today.

Aminolhuda, who is also Johor Amanah chairman, said PH is confident of defeating BN for the second time after the coalition lost in the state during the 14th General Election.

“If we could win in 2018, it is not impossible for us to defeat them in the next election,” said the Sri Gading Member of Parliament.

Yesterday, Onn Hafiz reportedly said that the decision to contest all 56 state seats was made after taking into account the views of Johoreans as well as grassroots leaders from state UMNO and BN on the party’s direction ahead of the election.

In the 2022 Johor polls, BN won 40 state seats, PH (12), Perikatan Nasional (three) and MUDA (one).

The PH Convention held today is seen as an important platform in determining the coalition’s direction, including preparations for the possibility of Johor and Melaka state elections this year. — BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU — The MADANI Government has achieved its best record in the nation’s history by resolving nine matters under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) within just three years of administration.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud (picture) said the achievement surpassed earlier administrations, which managed to resolve only four matters over a longer period.

He said 13 out of the 29 MA63 claims have now been resolved through the MA63 Implementation Action Council chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“We have resolved nine matters within three years together with both state governments, with the participation of the Premier of Sarawak and the Chief Minister of Sabah.

“This involves negotiations among the three key regions that formed Malaysia,” he said when delivering his speech as the Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) representative at the PH 2026 Convention held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here. 

Among the key achievements, he said, were the recognition of the Public Works Department (JKR) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) of Sabah and Sarawak as technical departments, amendments to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia Act to include representatives from the two regions, as well as efforts to strengthen the judiciary.

Mustapha also highlighted the MADANI Government’s commitment to raising the special interim allocation to RM600 million for each region, up from RM125.6 million in 2022.

“Where else can you find a government like this? The MADANI Government has not only demonstrated its commitment through words, but has also delivered on its manifesto, including appointing a Deputy Prime Minister from Borneo for the first time in the nation’s history,” he said.

He added that development allocations for Sabah had increased from RM5.2 billion in 2022 to RM6.9 billion under this year’s budget to accelerate critical infrastructure projects such as the Pan Borneo Highway.

Mustapha said the commitment showed that PH and the Unity Government remained committed to protecting the rights of the people of Sabah and Sarawak as outlined in the party constitution and the agreement on the formation of Malaysia. –BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU — The Pakatan Harapan (PH) 2026 Convention held today serves as the best platform for component parties of the coalition to formulate new strategies and approaches to ensure a brighter future for the country, said Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The PH 2026 Convention director said the convention, which is being held again after four years, provides delegates with the opportunity to pool ideas and energy for the benefit of Malaysians.

Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, said the convention is also an important platform to assess the achievements of the MADANI Government, which is now yielding positive results that cannot be disputed by any party.

“This convention is the best opportunity for us to gather our strength, ideas, and present proposals, formulas and approaches that we need to pursue to ensure a better future for Malaysia,” he said.

He said this in his welcoming speech at the PH 2026 Convention at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here.

Fahmi also stressed that the focus of this year’s convention includes preparations for the Melaka and Johor state elections, which are expected to be held in the near future.

“Together, we will listen to the message, substance and spirit that the PH chairman (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) wishes to deliver and entrust to us.

“Not only for the general election, but also for state elections that may take place soon, whether we intend to contest many seats, all or only some,” he said.

He also called on all delegates to strengthen their resolve in building a just nation and to bring renewed spirit back to the grassroots level after the convention concludes.
