HOME Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (picture) has refused to publicly confirm details of a Dec 1 update linked to investigations into the syringe attack on former Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli’s son, citing concerns it could disrupt police work.
Saifuddin Nasution said the request was raised by Pandan MP, through Parliament, as investigators continue efforts to identify the ‘mastermind’ behind the attack last August, an online news portal reported.
“An open confirmation (of details) in the Dewan Rakyat, there is concern that this will disrupt the process of tracing the suspect and can jeopardise the safety of key witnesses,” he stated.
Saifuddin Nasution, however, said the Home Ministry and police would provide a public update eventually, while stressing that justice will be upheld.
It was reported last year that Rafizi’s then 12-year-old son was stabbed with a syringe at a Putrajaya shopping mall car park and that Rafizi’s wife later received a threatening message warning, “Diam! Andai teruskan, AIDS! (Shut up! If you continue AIDS)”.
The former minister had suggested the incident may have been linked to his meeting with whistleblowers about former politician Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, while Farhash Wafa has denied any connection and filed a defamation suit against Rafizi.
In a separate written reply, Saifuddin Nasution said police are still awaiting forensic and ballistic test results in the Durian Tunggal, Alor Gajah, Melaka shooting case before a final decision can be made.
He said investigation papers have already been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), but the technical findings are needed to complete the assessment.
The case drew scrutiny after police initially said they acted in self-defence when three men were shot dead in Durian Tunggal, but the probe was later reclassified as a murder investigation and taken over by Bukit Aman.
The officers involved have been suspended, according to the report.
