A high-ranking Stasi officer discovers the leadership of State Security intends to kidnap his gifted son
OKLAHOMA CITY, Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — In the final days of the German Democratic Republic, just before Germany was reunited, a major in the foreign intelligence division of East Germany learns of a plan to kidnap Peter, his two-year old son, for unknown reasons. The child has extraordinary intelligence, though it is a mystery whether it’s from a natural or sinister origin. His parents desperately attempt to flee with their young son while the state security leadership invokes the entire power of the state to prevent them.
In “The Prodigy,” author Dee A. Replogle Jr. sets his historical thriller during a time of immense political chaos in communist Germany, as mass demonstrations grow and hundreds of thousands of people flee the country. Peter’s parents must escape East Germany with the help of the assassin sent to kill them, all while navigating the chaos of a disintegrating state.
“I wanted to create an enjoyable reading experience,” said Replogle, “and one which just might stimulate an interest in the possibilities of neuroscience, since anything is possible in today’s world of almost daily medical discoveries.”
Replogle has served for over 40 years on the board of a major medical research foundation where he developed his long-time interest in microbiology and neuroscience which he drew from to inform the scientific elements of the book, mainly the root of Peter’s gifts. One of the characters, a leading East German geneticist, believes Peter is the result of his experiments to create a child of unparalleled genius, hence the state security service leader’s desire to abduct and trade him for a better position in exile.
“This book deals with the challenges of parenting a very rapidly maturing, incredibly smart child,” said Replogle, “while avoiding kidnapping and assassination efforts of possibly the most efficient state security service the world has ever known. Repeated twists and turns make the book almost impossible to put down.”
