PM Anwar: World recognises Malaysia’s role in Thai-Cambodia peace efforts

LARUT — Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair in facilitating reconciliation efforts between Thailand and Cambodia following recent border tensions has been recognised internationally, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said that although there were certain quarters that refused to acknowledge Malaysia’s role, the trust placed by the countries involved was clear proof that they held Malaysia’s political and economic stability in high regard.

“Thank God, in Malaysia our politics are stable and our economic development is respected. So, when disputes arise, the task of reconciliation is entrusted to us. This is a form of international recognition, even if some in Parliament may choose not to acknowledge it — and that is fine,” he said.

Anwar made the remarks when opening the MADANI Dairy Entrepreneur Carnival at Farm Fresh Perak Dairy Complex today.

Air Canada set to shut down over flight attendants strike

TORONTO — Air Canada’s flight attendants were poised to strike on Saturday as the carrier cancelled hundreds of flights impacting more than 100,000 passengers ahead of a threatened work stoppage that could shut down service.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents Air Canada’s 10,000 flight attendants, was in a legal position to strike as of 12:01 am (0401 GMT), after delivering a 72-hour strike notice on Wednesday.

The public broadcaster CBC reported the labor action could begin around 1:00 am if no last-minute deal is reached.

Air Canada, which transports about 130,000 passengers daily, had said it would gradually wind down operations ahead of the possible strike.

As of 8:00 pm Friday, the airline said it had cancelled 623 flights affecting more than 100,000 passengers.

In addition to wage increases, the union says it wants to address uncompensated ground work, including during the boarding process.

Rafael Gomez, who heads the University of Toronto’s Center for Industrial Relations, told AFP it’s “common practice, even around the world” to compensate flight attendants based on time spent in the air.

He said the union had built an effective communication campaign around the issue, creating a public perception of unfairness.

An average passenger, not familiar with common industry practice, could think, “‘I’m waiting to board the plane and there’s a flight attendant helping me, but they’re technically not being paid for that work,’” he said.

“That’s a very good issue to highlight.”

Air Canada detailed its latest offer in a Thursday statement, specifying that under the terms, a senior flight attendant would on average make CAN$87,000 ($65,000) by 2027.

CUPE has described Air Canada’s offers as “below inflation (and) below market value.”

The union has also rejected requests from the federal government and Air Canada to resolve outstanding issues through independent arbitration.

Gomez said that if the flight attendants strike, he does not expect the stoppage to last long.

“This is peak season,” he said.

“The airline does not want to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue… They’re almost playing chicken with the flight attendants.” — AFP

Civil Defence: 46 killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza

GAZA — At least 46 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip on Friday, the Civil Defence said, reported Xinhua.

Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for the Civil Defence Authority, said seven people were killed in an airstrike that targeted a tent housing displaced persons in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood in western Gaza City.

He said that six others, including two children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a school building where displaced people were staying in the al-Daraj neighbourhood, east of Gaza City.

At least 24 people, including a woman and two children, were killed by the Israeli army while waiting to receive food in front of aid distribution centres north of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, at the Netzarim junction in the centre of the Strip, and the Zikim crossing in the north, according to Basal.

He added that four people, including a girl, were killed in Israeli shelling that targeted Palestinian gatherings and a residential house in the Zeitoun and Tuffah neighbourhoods in eastern Gaza City.

Two were killed in an airstrike on a tent housing displaced persons on the roof of the outpatient clinic building at al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, Basal noted.

Three Palestinians, including an infant, were also killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a tent housing displaced persons west of Gaza City, according to Basal.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said in statements on Friday that IDF troops, in coordination with the Air Forces, continue operational activity against “terrorist organisations” throughout the Gaza Strip, including Gaza City and Khan Younis.

Since Israel resumed its intensified military campaign on March 18, at least 10,300 Palestinians have been killed and 43,234 injured, bringing the overall death toll in Gaza since the war began in October 2023 to 61,827 and 155,275 people injured, according to health authorities in Gaza on Friday. — BERNAMA-XINHUA

King warns Mindef against buying ‘flying coffins’

MERSING — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia,  today issued a stern reminder to the Ministry of Defence not to repeat past mistakes in the procurement of military assets, particularly used aircraft that could endanger the lives of pilots and military personnel.  

His Majesty said the nation’s experience in purchasing second-hand Skyhawk aircraft should serve as a lesson, as the planes could not be fully utilised.  

“Do not repeat the past mistake like  when we bought second-hand Skyhawks… are we going to put our pilots in  ‘flying coffins’? Think for yourselves.  

“I believe all this happens because the Ministry of Defence is full of agents or ex-generals turned salesmen, and even textile traders trying to sell drones,” said Sultan Ibrahim at the 60th Anniversary Parade of Rejimen Gerak Khas (RGK) at Kem Iskandar, here.  

Also present were the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar Sultan Ibrahim.  

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Malaysian Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, and Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan were also in attendance.   

The A-4 Skyhawk, developed by McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing), was closely associated with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), which acquired 80 units from the United States in 1982 at US$1 million each, before retiring the fleet due to a high accident rate.  

Sultan Ibrahim, who is also Colonel Commandant of Gerup Gerak Khas (GGK), further advised the Defence Minister to cancel the proposed purchase of Black Hawk helicopters that are over 30 years old, out of concern that the same mistake would be repeated.  

The monarch emphasised that all parties involved in military procurement must ensure evaluations are conducted transparently, based on market prices and the actual needs of the armed forces, and not merely on the recommendations of agents or vested interests.  

“Do not waste time buying nonsense that does not fit the needs of the military. If you don’t know the price, ask me first.  

“Five years ago, I pointed out the purchase of rigid raiding craft for the commandos at RM5 million, when I could have sourced a better boat for under RM2 million.   

“Recently, I heard there was a proposal to buy a similar boat but in a larger size, at nearly RM10 million. This makes no sense and must be carefully reviewed,” Sultan Ibrahim said.  

His Majesty stressed that if all asset purchases are made at inflated ‘middleman’ prices, then government allocations will never be sufficient.  

“Therefore, do not try to fool me. If you do not want to heed my advice, I will not speak up again,” His Majesty said.  

In addition to highlighting the need for price transparency, Sultan Ibrahim also criticised the delay in the combat diving pool project at RGK Camp, which was supposed to be completed in 2022 but is still not operational.  

At the same time, His Majesty urged the government to prioritise the acquisition of new equipment to ensure RGK’s readiness remains at the highest level, enabling swift response to any threat.  

The parade was held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the RGK’s establishment and to honour the services and sacrifices of this elite unit’s warriors in defending the nation’s sovereignty. — BERNAMA

Amir Hamdan appointed Prasarana president, group CEO

KUALA LUMPUR — Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) has appointed Amir Hamdan (picture) as its president and group chief executive officer (PGCEO), effective Aug 15.

Prasarana, in a statement, said Amir had been serving as acting PGCEO since July 1.

Prasarana chairman Tan Sri Mohd Nasir Ahmad said Amir’s appointment as PGCEO was based on his outstanding performance and significant contributions since joining the company.

“His calm yet authoritative leadership, grounded in the company’s work culture, has demonstrated his capability to lead the Prasarana Group forward.

“The board is confident that he will continue to steer the organisation towards greater achievements, in line with the national agenda of strengthening the country’s public transport system,” he said in the same statement. 

Meanwhile, Amir, who expressed his gratitude for the appointment, described it as a great trust and responsibility for him.

People’s will, not mine — 85-year-old Yunus shares why he stepped into Bangladesh’s political hot seat

KUALA LUMPUR — Age has not slowed down Nobel Peace Prize laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus (picture), 85, who could have chosen a quiet life of retirement, far from the turbulence of Bangladesh’s national transition. 

Instead, he now finds himself in the centre of a political change, sitting in a hot seat to take up a role that he described not as ambition but a duty he has to perform.

Yunus, the Chief Adviser to the Government of Bangladesh, responding to questions at a recent interview here, quickly says it was never about him but the people.

“It’s not me. It’s the people who want this change. I am just helping them to go the way they want,” Yunus told Bernama, in an exclusive interview at the end of his three-day official visit to Malaysia.

He was in the country at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from Aug 11 to 13. 

“I don’t impose anything of my own. I just wait to see what the will of the people is, and then I facilitate it,” he said in a conversation with Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, together with Editor of International News Service Voon Miaw Ping and Assistant Editor of Bernama Economic Service Kisho Kumari Sucedaram.

For a man who earned global recognition as the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize laureate for pioneering microfinance, stepping into the seat of political leadership was never part of his plan. However, he said, circumstances left him with little choice.

Yunus humbly describes his role, less as a leader, and more as a guardian of a democratic process long denied. Yet, he acknowledges the immense challenges ahead.

“There are many difficulties. Many people want to disrupt this, as the political elements that were ousted from Bangladesh are attempting to destabilise the entire system,” he said, adding that many first-time voters who came of age over the past decade and a half had never cast a ballot before. 

He said some people had been waiting for 10 years, and some even 15.

“Imagine being 18 years old, excited to vote, but your chance never came because elections were never truly held. Now, they will be casting their vote for the first time in 15 years,” he explained.

His words carry the weight of hope for a national transition. Bangladesh’s next general election is scheduled for February next year.

The world-renowned economist and social entrepreneur was hand-picked by Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin to lead the transitional government on Aug 8, 2024, in the aftermath of the youth-led uprising that ousted former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, and brought an end to her authoritarian rule.

Yunus’s journey of service began decades earlier, inspired by the Bangladesh famine of 1974. Moved to help those in dire need, he made a modest personal loan of just US$27 to 42 families, enabling them to produce goods for sale without the crushing burden of high interest under predatory lending. 

The Grameen Bank initiative began in 1976, as an action research pilot project in Bangladesh’s Chattogram district. By 1983, the project had evolved into a fully operational bank, with a mission to alleviate poverty and empower marginalised communities in Bangladesh through micro-credit.

According to data on the Grameen Bank website, as of June 2025, the bank has disbursed a cumulative total of US$40,368.61 million to 10.72 million borrowers, with women comprising an impressive 97 per cent of its membership since its inception. — BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar (picture) today urged Malaysians, especially Muslims, to work together to put an end to all forms of bullying.

He said bullying is a vile act that not only causes physical harm but also leaves deep emotional scars.

“Islam teaches us to live with mutual respect and compassion, and to safeguard the rights and dignity of every individual. Bullying does not merely injure the body but also breaks hearts and extinguishes hope.

“Remember, the prayers of those who are wronged have no barrier before Allah. Therefore, avoid any form of injustice, even as small as a speck. Bullying must stop, and love must flourish,” he said in a video posted on Facebook today.

Meta probed over AI chatbot talk with children

SAN FRANCISCO — A US senator on Friday announced an investigation into whether Meta AI chatbots were allowed to engage in potentially harmful online exchanges with children.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley posted a copy of a letter to Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg demanding all documents and communications related to a report that its AI chatbots were permitted to have “romantic” and “sensual” exchanges with minors.

“We have clear policies on what kind of responses AI characters can offer, and those policies prohibit content that sexualizes children and sexualized role play between adults and minors,” a Meta spokesperson said in response to an AFP inquiry.

Hawley said the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, which he heads, will start an investigation into whether Meta generative AI products “enable exploitation, deception, or other criminal harms to children.”

Meta was put on notice to preserve all relevant records and submit them to Congress by September 19.

The Missouri senator cited a reported example of Meta’s AI chatbot being allowed to refer to an 8-year-old child’s body as “a work of art” and “a treasure I cherish deeply.” — AFP

About the Lawsuit

KinderCare and certain of its executives and others are charged with failing to disclose material information in its IPO Registration Statement and Prospectus (collectively, the “Offering Documents”), violating federal securities laws. 

The alleged false and misleading statements and omissions include, but are not limited to, that: (i) numerous incidents of child abuse, neglect, and harm had occurred at KinderCare facilities; (ii) the Company did not provide the “highest quality care possible” at its facilities, and, indeed, in numerous instances had failed to provide even basic care, meet minimum standards in the child care industry, or comply with the laws and regulations governing the care of children; and (iii) as a result, the Company was exposed to a material, undisclosed risk of lawsuits, adverse regulatory action, negative publicity, reputational damage, and business loss.
