FORMER UMNO MP Tawfik Ismail is urging Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) to distance itself from race-based parties within the opposition bloc, warning that such ties could undermine nation-building.
He said MUDA risks compromising its ideals by remaining in the loose coalition announced by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysiapresident Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin earlier this week, which Parti Sosialis Malaysia declined to join over concerns of ethnic-based rhetoric.
“If MUDA wants to look to the future, it should withdraw and the coalition appears race-based and united only by its aim to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said as quoted by an online portal.
Tawfik noted that race-based parties were relevant during independence, but six decades later, Malaysia must prioritise integration and nation-building through non-racial platforms.
He said MUDA should hold to its young and idealistic vision, rather than align with opportunistic, identity-driven groups.
Tawfik, who is also part of the G25 group of prominent retired civil servants, stressed that Opposition parties must move beyond identity politics and focus on issues to remain credible.
On Monday (Aug 18), it was reported that 11 Opposition parties, including Bersatu, PAS, Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air and MUDA, had agreed to form a coalition aimed at holding the government accountable and pressing Anwar on reform pledges.
Penang MUDA information chief Danial Abdul Majeed clarified that the coalition was not a formal pact but a collaborative platform, stressing that the party would remain firm in voicing its concerns.
He said cooperation was possible on issues that improved the lives of the people, citing the economy, education and social wellbeing, while reiterating that MUDA would never compromise on its principles.
Danial added that the party would continue to raise concerns in line with its constitution and core values, similar to the collaborative approach between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN).— TMR
