DATUK Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has denied having knowledge of land transfers involving flood retention ponds in Kuala Lumpur during his tenure as federal territories minister, saying land matters were under the Prime Minister’s Department at the time.
He said the Land and Mines Department was placed under the chief secretary to the government and that he was not part of the land committee overseeing such matters.
The former Putrajaya MP was responding to claims by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh that the capacity of flood retention ponds in Jinjang and Batu had shrunk to about 30% of their original 33.5ha after 17 land lots were transferred to developers since 2015, New Straits Times (NST) reported.
The former federal territories minister, who served between 2013 and 2018, also stressed that he would never allow flood mitigation infrastructure such as retention ponds and lakes to be compromised for development purposes.
Meanwhile, former Batu MP Chua Tian Chang called for an investigation into the approval process behind the land transfers, saying developers and officials involved should face action if wrongdoing is proven.
Former Kepong MP Dr Tan Seng Giaw said parties responsible for flood-related damage in Kuala Lumpur should compensate affected residents, while Malaysian Corruption Watch (MWC) president Jais Abdul Karim urged enforcement agencies to investigate possible abuse of power, conflict of interest and governance lapses linked to the land transfers.
