FOR many millennials (and some Gen Z fans), Pokémon was never just a game. It was a childhood ritual, a playground currency and, for some, an early lesson in loyalty, particularly when Pikachu refused to stay inside the Poké Ball.
Now, nearly three decades after Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green were launched in Japan in 1996, The Pokémon Co is bringing its 30th anniversary celebration to Kuala Lumpur, with the city leading the regional rollout across Asia through a series of fan-focused experiences.
The announcement was made at a press conference and preview in Kuala Lumpur on June 16, where guests were treated to a Pikachu dance show and a first look at what fans can expect from the upcoming celebration.
The centrepiece is PokéXciting! in Kuala Lumpur, taking place on Sept 12 and 13 at KLCC Park. Admission is free, allowing fans to join the festivities without having to battle their wallets first.
The event will also feature Malaysia’s first-ever Pokémon drone show, lighting up the Kuala Lumpur skyline with illuminated formations and 3D animations of beloved Pokémon characters.
The Pokémon Co corporate officer Susumu Fukunaga said the celebration was designed to be more than a single event, describing it as a tribute to fans who have supported the franchise over the past three decades.
“We wanted PokéXciting! to be more than just an event — it’s a celebration to thank fans across Asia for their support over the past three decades, and a chance for them to experience Pokémon together,” he said at the press conference.
For this writer, that is reason enough to “catch them all” — not the Pokémon this time, but every event on the calendar. A Pikachu plush toy will likely be making an appearance too, partly for emotional support and partly for the photos.
Adding to the excitement is the debut of PokéXciting! Pikachu, a party-themed version of the iconic character. Kuala Lumpur’s edition will feature a turquoise costume unique to the city.
The celebrations will continue with Pokémon RUN 30: Malaysia Edition on Nov 21 and 22. The fun run is designed as an immersive Pokémon adventure, where participants choose their first partner Pokémon and take on themed challenges inspired by the franchise, including Gym Battles, wild Pokémon encounters and Pokédex-style activities.
Those who prefer cheering from the side will not be left out.
A free-admission Festival Zone will feqture a “Time Tunnel” showcasing Pokémon’s 30-year history, alongside interactive experience zones and a special Pokémon pop-up store.
From Sept 12 until the end of December, Ombak KLCC will host Malaysia’s first Nintendo Pop-Up Store and first Pokémon Centre Pop-Up Store, offering official merchandise, plush toys, trading cards and anniversary items.
KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd Group CEO Datuk Sr Mohd Salem Kailany said the partnership reflected the KLCC precinct’s role as a meeting point for culture, tourism and city life.
“This collaboration with The Pokémon Co exemplifies our placemaking approach, leveraging globally recognised intellectual property (IP) to create engaging experiences that enrich the visitor journey and contribute to the vibrancy of our city,” he said.
Thirty years on, Pokémon still knows how to bring fans together — to queue, run, cheer and smile — proving that some childhood companions never truly leave us.
