PRIME Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia and the Philippines are committed to enhancing their strategic partnership to build a more peaceful and united ASEAN.
Anwar had a phone conversation with his counterpart, President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr earlier on Aug 6.
“The discussion also touched on the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in international waters and border areas, which is a shared priority for regional stability,” he said in a Facebook post.
The PM also commented on encouraging developments regarding border negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, which are expected to be finalised on Aug 7 through an agreement between the nations’ defence ministers during the Extraordinary General Border Committee Meeting.
Anwar said this marks another step towards achieving ASEAN’s goal of becoming a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.
Cambodia’s Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thailand’s Acting Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit are expected to attend the meeting, along with their countries’ Chiefs of Defence Forces and government representatives.
Following a special meeting chaired by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya on July 28, the two nations agreed to a ceasefire that took effect at midnight.
