ASIA’S path to energy transition is being clouded by a volatile geopolitical landscape, making it harder for governments and businesses to plan and invest with confidence.
Khazanah Research Institute research advisor Emeritus Prof Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram said recent developments — including regional conflicts and unilateral trade policies — have introduced new layers of unpredictability to the global energy outlook.
“I think we are living in very unpredictable times, and that’s part of the problem with rising markets,” he said during a panel on navigating energy markets in a multipolar world during Energy Asia 2025.
Citing the tariffs announced by US president Donal Trump in April, Jomo said such actions have disrupted assumptions about global cooperation and trade, further complicating Asia’s energy planning.
“We’re not seeing a repeat of the old Cold War. We are seeing something much more nuanced, much more new, and still evolving. And that is part of the problem of trying to plan in this present situation,” he added.
Jomo also took aim at the weakening of global climate commitments, describing how momentum towards renewables has faltered in recent years despite major pledges.
“Within less than half a year after the Glasgow commitment to get rid of coal, we saw a renewed commitment in Europe to resume coal mining and so on,” he said.
According to him, this reversal of commitments has eroded trust in international cooperation and weakened the credibility of state-led transition efforts.
“States seem to become increasingly either irrelevant or unreliable,” he warned, adding that this undermines investor confidence in long-term climate and energy strategies.
Against this backdrop, Jomo said the region must prepare for a future where energy security and transition efforts are shaped less by global consensus and more by resilience, adaptability, and regional cooperation.
