2026 World Economic Forum (WEF)

BILLIONAIRE Elon Musk is going to the World Economic Forum in Davos for the first time, after years of trading barbs with the organizers of the annual gathering of plutocrats. 

Musk was confirmed as a last minute addition for a Thursday afternoon session, speaking to BlackRock Chief Executive Officer Larry Fink. 

An appearance from Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc., SpaceX and xAI, marks a major shift in the relationship between the world’s richest man and the event that draws world leaders, billionaires and global media to the mountains of Switzerland every January. 

It comes on the tails of an appearance by his ally, US President Donald Trump, who spoke on Wednesday for well over an hour in a speech that covered everything from censorship to why the US should control Greenland. Musk was invited last year, but didn’t go.

Musk has in the past called the annual gathering of the world’s elite “boring” and slammed the WEF as a body that’s “increasingly becoming an unelected world government that the people never asked for and don’t want.” 

“How is WEF/Davos even a thing? Are they trying to be the boss of Earth!?” he posted on his X social media platform in 2022.

The WEF — a Geneva-based nonprofit that aims to foster collaboration between governments and businesses to “serve society and the planet” — has responded in kind. A spokesman said in 2023 that Musk hadn’t been invited since 2015. 

The relationship began to thaw last year when organizers asked the newly elected Trump and Musk to join. The WEF said that Musk was “welcome” last year because of interest in “his new role” in the Trump administration.

While Musk has since stepped away from his place in the Trump administration trying to improve government efficiency, he’s at the center of a number of key global conversations, from SpaceX’s role in providing internet access in places like Iran and Ukraine to to the outcry around sexualized images generated by his Grok artificial intelligence tool. –BLOOMBERG

PRESIDENT Donald Trump upped the pressure on Europe to cede control of Greenland or face the consequences, saying that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization owes it to the US to grant it full rights to the Arctic island.

In a speech to the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday after prompting days of transatlantic tensions over his plans, Trump said that he was seeking “immediate negotiations” on acquiring the sovereign Danish territory for national security reasons.

The president ruled out the use of military force, but he insinuated that he would weigh Europe’s response to his demands when considering the US’s commitment to NATO going forward.

“You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative, or you can say no, and we will remember,” the president said. 

Denmark’s immediate reaction was “no.”

“We will not enter into any negotiations on the basis of giving up fundamental principles,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said in Copenhagen. “That is something we will never do.” It “goes without saying” that Danes clearly reject ceding Greenland to the US, he added.

Trump, asked later Wednesday about Rasmussen’s remarks, said that he wanted to hear from Denmark in person.

“If he wants to tell me, he’ll tell me that to my face,” Trump said during a meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte. Trump said he would discuss the issue with Rutte, who he saw as “frankly more important” than Danish officials.

Earlier, Trump cast the request as a “small ask” compared to the defense shield that the US has offered NATO countries for decades. 

“What I’m asking for is a piece of ice, cold and poorly located, that can play a vital role in world peace and world protection,” he said.

Trump’s speech was closely watched for any signs that he was backing off his demands to take the world’s largest island, after triggering strong pushback from allies in eastern Europe to the Nordic nations as well as heavyweights Germany, France and the UK. European Union leaders are planning an extraordinary summit to discuss a response to Trump’s Greenland threats, including tariffs on goods from European nations that oppose him.

Still, his vow not to use force is likely to prompt at least some exhalation in European capitals and on Wall Street.

“That’s probably the biggest statement I made, because people thought I would use force,” he said. “I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force.”

Asked later to clarify his suggestion that he would “remember” if Europe did not accede to his demands, Trump declined, telling a reporter to “figure that out yourself.”

Finnish President Alexander Stubb told national broadcaster YLE that Trump removing force from the table meant “the catastrophe has been avoided,” and diplomatic work should proceed on strengthening Arctic security. 

In his speech, Trump doubled down on his desires, deriding Europe’s liberal democracies, their governments’ policies, NATO’s effectiveness and singling out individual leaders including Canada’s Mark Carney and Emmanuel Macron of France for criticism.

Faced with Washington’s intransigence, Greenland’s government is already making preparations for an invasion, though it’s still seen as an unlikely scenario. Canada’s military has meanwhile modeled how it would respond to an American incursion after Trump publicly talked about the country as a potential 51st state, according to a report in the Globe and Mail. 

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Rasmussen missed the Davos speech as he was meeting with the parliament’s foreign affairs committee in Copenhagen, but said he’d been briefed on it.

“What is clear after this speech is that the president’s ambition [to own Greenland] remains intact,” he told reporters. “It is, in isolation, positive that it is being said that military force will not be used, but that does not make the problem go away. The challenge is still there.”

Denmark plans to continue on the diplomatic track agreed to last week in Washington, he said, adding that “in 2026, you do not trade people, you trade with people.”

Trump’s sales pitch occasionally veered off script. He claimed that the US had selflessly established military bases on Greenland in World War II, before acknowledging moments later it was in the country’s own self-interest. He also repeatedly referred to Greenland as Iceland.

But the crux of Trump’s argument was that the US needed full control of the island because it was critical to the deployment of his planned “Golden Dome” missile defense system.

“Greenland is a vast, almost entirely uninhabited territory sitting undefended in a key strategic location between the United States, Russia and China,” he said. “That’s exactly where it is, right smack in the middle.”

While casting the American acquisition of Greenland as essential to collective security, he downplayed the danger it would pose to NATO.

“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable,” Trump said. “But I won’t do that.”

Trump’s not-so-veiled threat against Europe and NATO if they don’t help him to cut a deal for Greenland takes place against the backdrop of an aggressive Vladimir Putin, who is widely considered to at least have some desire to capture European lands beyond Ukraine.

Trump, in a discussion following his speech, sidestepped a question about what type of deal he saw emerging over Greenland’s future. Instead, he emphasized his belief that the territory was too expensive for Denmark to administer and reiterated his complaints about NATO.

“We’ll see what happens. I just say this, NATO has treated the United States of America very unfairly,” he said. “We never asked for anything. We never got anything.”

NATO forces, Danes among them, have accompanied the US in a number of military endeavors, including the mission in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the war in Iraq. Rutte stressed that history in his meeting with Trump, insisting the alliance would support the US if it were ever attacked again.

“Your allies will be with you absolutely, there’s an absolute guarantee,” Rutte said. “I really want to tell you this because it is important — it pains me if you think it is not.”

Trump said the sentiment was “very nice.”

Still, Trump continued to argue it would be impractical to safeguard land not under US control.

“Who the hell wants to defend a license agreement or a lease?” Trump said in his Davos address, adding “you need the ownership to defend it.”

He also cited US support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion as an example of what he saw as the unequal transatlantic relationship, saying the burden should fall onto Europe for supporting Kyiv.

“The United States is very far away. We have a big, beautiful ocean separating us. We have nothing to do with it,” Trump said.

European leaders in recent days have been discussing how to respond to Trump’s demands, including potential economic retaliation, but the US president has dismissed those threats, suggesting that allies have more to lose by opposing his agenda. 

He also delivered a harsh warning to Europe, suggesting the continent’s governments were falling behind the US and that leaders needed to emulate his model to provide for their citizens.

“I love Europe, and I want to see Europe go good, but it’s not heading in the right direction,” he said. –BLOOMBERG

US President Donald Trump accused Mark Carney of ingratitude for American military protection, firing back after the Canadian leader used a Davos stage to urge mid-sized nations to band together against aggressive superpowers. 

Speaking at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, Trump pointed out his proposed Golden Dome missile shield would also defend Canadian airspace. 

“Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should be grateful also, but they’re not. I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn’t so grateful,” Trump said. 

“Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

Carney’s speech on Tuesday reverberated through the annual gathering of political and business elites. He declared the international rules-based order effectively dead and argued the world has shifted to an era “where the most powerful pursue their interests using economic integration as coercion.”

He didn’t name Trump, but he cited tactics closely associated with the US president — “tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited” — and urged countries to push back by building new forms of cooperation.

“Middle powers must act together because if you are not at the table, you are on the menu,” he said. 

The remarks were especially striking given Canada’s long-standing economic integration and military cooperation with the US. Carney, 60, a former central banker, won office last year on a pledge to reduce that dependence. He has since signed a limited trade deal with China and begun to roll out billions in new defense spending.

Canada is considering investments in the Golden Dome system, which the US president has estimated at $175 billion but a Bloomberg analysis found may cost as much as $1.1 trillion. The proposal — which contains unproven space-based technology — would protect the continent from threats including ballistic missiles, hypersonics and advanced cruise missiles. 

The two countries already jointly operate the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or Norad. In 2022, Canada unveiled a C$38.6 billion ($28 billion) plan to modernize the system. That funding includes a new Australian-developed radar network to detect incoming missiles, announced by Carney in March.

Canada has long leaned on the US for continental defense — especially in the Arctic, where Norad and US capabilities underpin much of the region’s security. But the relationship hasn’t been one-way. Canada has followed the US into conflicts, including under the United Nations banner in the Korean War and in Afghanistan after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. 

More than 40,000 Canadian troops served in the Afghanistan mission; 158 died.

Carney left the World Economic Forum on Wednesday just as Trump was arriving. One of his final meetings was with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and a readout from Carney’s office highlighted Canada’s plans to quadruple defense spending over a decade and bolster Arctic security.

CANADIAN Prime Minister Mark Carney used a major address in Davos to argue that the world’s middle powers must band together to resist coercion from aggressive superpowers.

Recent events have shown the “rules-based international order” is effectively dead, Carney said, which means Canada and other countries have no choice but to create new alliances to oppose pressure tactics and intimidation by the world’s great powers. His speech didn’t mention U.S. President Donald Trump by name.

Canada stands firmly behind Greenland as tensions rise in the Arctic over Trump’s repeated statements that the U.S. must own the territory for security reasons, the prime minister said at the World Economic Forum on Tuesday. The semi-autonomous island and Denmark have a “unique right to determine Greenland’s future,” he said.

His remarks amounted to a call for a new architecture of cooperation among mid-sized countries. The prime minister said such alliances can be the last line of defense in an era when dominant states use their economic and military might to impose their will, and he urged joint investments in deterrence.

“Stop invoking the ‘rules-based international order’ as though it still functions as advertised,” Carney said. “Call the system what it is: a period where the most powerful pursue their interests using economic integration as a weapon of coercion.”

Canada is working with partners in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to secure the alliance’s northern and western flanks, and its commitment to Article 5 — NATO’s joint defense clause — is “unwavering,” Carney said.

His speech came amid a widening transatlantic rift. Hours before Carney’s speech, France’s Emmanuel Macron attacked Trump’s trade strategy, which includes the threat of further tariffs on European nations unless the U.S. is allowed to acquire Greenland.

Overnight, Trump posted a photo of a map that shows both Greenland and Canada covered by the American flag.

Faced with strong-arm tactics by larger nations, “there is a strong tendency for countries to go along to get along. To accommodate. To avoid trouble. To hope that compliance will buy safety,” Carney said. “It won’t.”

“Middle powers must act together because if you are not at the table, you are on the menu,” the prime minister added.

Canada and Mexico are also preparing for negotiations with the White House on the North American trade pact, and American officials have publicly mused about breaking up that accord and pursuing bilateral talks instead.

Trump is scheduled to attend the summit Wednesday, the same day Carney is leaving. It’s not yet known if the two leaders will cross paths.

Carney called on world leaders and companies to start “naming reality.” He cited a famous essay from Czech dissident Václav Havel that described how the communist system sustained itself because people were willing to lie to each other, and to themselves, about its realities.

International leaders shouldn’t fall into that trap when talking about the geopolitical landscape, Carney said.

While Carney didn’t directly name the U.S. — apart from a brief reference to “American hegemony” — his remarks clearly took aim at some of Trump’s preferred pressure tactics, including “tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.”

Carney’s comments were particularly striking given Canada’s long-standing economic integration with the U.S., and vulnerability to potential retaliation by Trump. Carney himself has opted to placate the U.S. president at times, removing many of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs and apologizing for an anti-tariff ad launched by the province of Ontario.

Canada has shifted its strategic posture, Carney argued. He alluded to a wide-ranging trade deal he signed last week with Chinese President Xi Jinping, in which China agreed to reduce tariffs on Canadian agriculture products while Canada eased levies on Chinese-made electric vehicles.

“We are engaging broadly, strategically, with open eyes,” he said in the Davos speech. “We actively take on the world as it is, not wait for the world as we wish it to be.”

Canada is also working on new trade and security partnerships with India, Qatar, Thailand, the Philippines, and trade alliances including Mercosur and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, he said.
