Amazon.com Inc. is eliminating about 100 positions from its devices and services division, which works on products including the Alexa voice assistant and Kindle e-reader, highlighting the e-commerce company’s efforts to trim its corporate workforce.
“As part of our ongoing work to make our teams and programs operate more efficiently, and to better align with our product road map, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles,” Amazon spokeswoman Kristy Schmidt said Wednesday in a statement. “We don’t make these decisions lightly, and we’re committed to supporting affected employees through their transitions.”
In 2022, Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy initiated Amazon’s biggest-ever round of corporate job cuts, which ultimately eliminated 27,000 positions across the Seattle-based company. There have since been several smaller rounds of reductions targeting particular departments, including its communications unit in January. Amazon had 1.56 million full- and part-time workers as of March 31, up 3% from a year earlier. The online retailer’s workforce is mostly made up of hourly logistics employees in its warehouse and delivery network.
The job cuts at Amazon’s devices team were reported earlier by Reuters. Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday said it will eliminate 6,000 positions across the company in an effort to reduce management layers. –BLOOMBERG
