THE Philippines has reaffirmed its commitment to ASEAN regional integration, expressing support for Timor Leste’s membership while preparing to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026.
Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs at the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theressa P. Lazaro said the country backs Timor Leste’s inclusion as a full member, although discussions are still ongoing.
“I cannot speculate, but based on the discussions we have had, I think it is positive and is also the aspiration of ASEAN, particularly the current chair, Malaysia.
“Timor Leste could become a member soon. But it is highly speculative. There are still a number of issues and discussions that need to take place,” she said to reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre during the 46th ASEAN Summit on Saturday.
Lazaro said preparations are underway as the Philippines gears up to take over the ASEAN chairmanship from Malaysia next year.
She said that the Philippines aims to carry forward the leadership momentum and achievements made under Malaysia’s term.
Additionally, she mentioned there are many challenges ahead and that the Philippines will play an important role.
“Chairing ASEAN next year is a key agenda of the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“We congratulate Malaysia on the success of its chairmanship so far,” Lazaro said.
While plans are progressing, she said it is still too early to reveal the theme and priorities for the 2026 chairmanship.
“It is still too early to speak about our theme and priorities. We want Malaysia to complete this summit before we take over,” she added.
