Iran urges US to show ‘more realistic’ approach at nuclear talks

IRAN’S top nuclear negotiator said he hopes the US will show a “more realistic approach” at the next round of talks between the two countries.

“There’s now a better understanding on the other side of Iran’s fundamental principles and positions,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told state TV after a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday. “We hope they will come to the next round of negotiations with a more realistic approach,” he added, without elaborating.

Araghchi also criticized US President Donald Trump for presenting a “highly deceptive view” of Iran in a speech at an investment summit in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Trump accused the government in Tehran of “stealing their people’s wealth to fund terror and bloodshed abroad.”

The comments came hours after the US announced new sanctions on a shipping network it accused of helping to move billions of dollars of Iranian oil.

The timing and location of the next round of talks with the US is yet to be decided, Araghchi said. Deputy foreign ministers from Iran, the UK, France and Germany will meet in Istanbul on Friday for separate discussions on sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program, he added. –BLOOMBERG
