KEYFIELD International Bhd said its wholly owned subsidiary, Keyfield Resolute Sdn Bhd, has entered into a shipbuilding contract with China-based Jiangsu Shunhong Marine Technology Co Ltd for the construction of a new 90-metre diesel-electric dynamic positioning 2 anchor handling tug supply vessel.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the group said the contract price is US$18 million, or equivalent to about RM70.7 million.
The vessel is part of Keyfield’s strategy to increase its exposure to anchor handling tug supply vessels while maintaining its core strength in accommodation workboats, as it expands international charter operations, particularly in the Middle East.
Keyfield said its existing AHTS fleet is largely committed to or earmarked for long-term charters, and the new vessel will expand available capacity, enabling the group to pursue new tender and spot charter opportunities without affecting current commitments.
The shipbuilding will be funded through a combination of internal cash and approximately RM45 million of remaining unutilised sukuk proceeds.
Keyfield said the project is expected to contribute positively to group earnings once the vessel is deployed in its chartering business.
The new DP2 AHTS is expected to be delivered and deployed tentatively in 2027 or 2028.
Keyfield added that none of its directors or substantial shareholders has any interest, direct or indirect, in the shipbuilding contract. — TMR
