Three-year-old killed in Kg Seri Cheeding fire

SHAH ALAM — A three-year-old child was killed in a fire that involved three houses in Kampung Seri Cheeding, Banting, early this morning.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said the department was alerted to the incident at 2.44 am and immediately deployed 17 personnel, who arrived at the scene within 12 minutes.

“Initial information indicated that a three-year-old child was trapped inside the house, and firefighting and rescue efforts were carried out urgently.

“The fire was brought under control around 3.30 am, but later the child’s body was found badly burned,” he said in a statement today.

Ahmad Mukhlis said personnel from the Teluk Panglima Garang, Banting, and Kuala Lumpur International Airport fire and rescue stations assisted in the operations. — BERNAMA

Decision soon on contract renewal for Malaysian MotoGP to be held at SIC

KUALA LUMPUR — The decision on whether to extend the contract to host the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), to be held at the end of this year, will be known soon.

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said the paperwork for the MotoGP contract renewal in the country has been presented to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and is awaiting tabling at the Cabinet.

“Insya-Allah, we should get news (on the contract extension for the hosting of the MotoGP at SIC) within this month.

“We have proposed five years, but it will depend on the Cabinet decision. We hope to extend the contract for five years because there are many other projects that we intend to carry out with MotoGP,” he said when met after the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) Awards Night 2025 here yesterday.

Malaysia’s current contract for hosting the MotoGP, renewed in 2024, is until this year. 

Azhan Shafriman said one of the projects it intends to carry out with MotoGP is setting up the base for the Asia Talent Cup in Sepang, which will create job opportunities for local talent, such as engineers, mechanics and data engineers.

Although the fee for hosting the MotoGP has risen by 10 to 15 per cent, he remains confident that the increase commensurates with the SIC offer to extend the contract for the world’s most prestigious motorcycling race.

Meanwhile, MotoGP chief sporting officer Carlos Ezpeleta said there has been a lot of progress, and he is feeling very comfortable about the contract renewal for the race at SIC.

“We’re looking forward, for sure, to another five years of the agreement with SIC, it’s a really important market. 

“In these past months, we’ve been able to progress on the negotiations, so it’s pretty much done now. It’s just a question of getting it formalised with the ministries,” he said.

The MotoGP race in Malaysia has been held at SIC since 1999, with the only exception being its cancellation in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. — BERNAMA

Pahang Sultan gives consent for UnIPSAS to be renamed as Universiti Al-Quran

KUANTAN — The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah (picture), has consented to rename Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (UnIPSAS) as Universiti Al-Quran, making it the first of its kind in the country.

Al-Sultan Abdullah said efforts to uphold Islam in Pahang will be strengthened through a university centred on Quranic studies.

His Royal Highness said the renaming is more than a name change, but a clear direction in positioning the Quran as a hallmark of the state’s intellectual and spiritual growth.

“This branding is like raising a landmark in the state, clearly signalling its direction and purpose,” he said in a post on the Kesultanan Pahang Facebook page today.

The Ruler was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 69th Pahang Quran and Memorisation competition at Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, here, yesterday.

Al-Sultan Abdullah also hoped the soon-to-be-proclaimed Universiti Al-Quran would spread understanding of the Quran and produce scholars, preachers and leaders guided by divine revelation.

Immigration Department detains 152 illegals at Cheras shopping mall

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Immigration Department detained 152 foreign nationals for various immigration offences during enforcement operations at food outlets in a shopping mall in Cheras last night.

The arrests were made during Ops Selera and Ops Sapu, which targeted premises suspected of employing foreign workers without valid documents.

Deputy director-general (Operations) Datuk Lokman Effendi Ramli said 890 individuals were checked during the operation, which began at 8pm, involving 458 foreign nationals and 432 Malaysians.

He said the detainees, comprising 82 men and 70 women aged between 21 and 42 from Myanmar, China, Indonesia and Bangladesh, were held for offences such as not having valid travel documents, breaching pass conditions, overstaying and holding unrecognised cards under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

“After receiving public complaints about the high number of foreign workers at food outlets in the mall, the Immigration Department carried out a week of intelligence work before making the move,” he told reporters after the operation.

In a separate development, he said about 155,000 foreign nationals have registered under the Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 so far, with 138,000 of them having voluntarily returned to their home countries.

He said Bangladeshi nationals recorded the highest participation in the programme, followed by Indonesians, and registrations are expected to rise as the April deadline approaches.

Bursa Malaysia opens lower, tracking Wall Street declines

KUALA LUMPUR — Bursa Malaysia opened lower on Friday, dragged by mild profit-taking in select counters, tracking Wall Street’s overnight decline amid lingering global caution.

At 9.10 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 3.73 points to 1,727.29, after opening 1.79 points lower at 1,729.23, compared with Thursday’s close of 1,731.02.

On the broader market, losers outnumbered gainers 374 to 72, while 275 counters were unchanged. A total of 1,934 counters were untraded, with 27 suspended.

Market turnover stood at 240.07 million shares worth RM149.64 million.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said Wall Street finished sharply lower as sustained selling in technology stocks, coupled with weak jobs data, heightened concerns in a market already rattled by a major downturn in the software sector.

“The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.20 per cent to 48,908.72, the S&P 500 dropped 1.23 per cent to 6,798.40, while the Nasdaq Composite plunged 1.59 per cent to 22,540.59.

“In Hong Kong, stocks rose on bargain hunting in technology names such as Lenovo, Baidu, and Xiaomi, with the Hang Seng Index gaining 0.14 per cent to 26,885.24,” he told Bernama.

On the local front, Thong said yesterday’s FBM KLCI decline should be seen as a pause rather than a reversal after a strong run.

“The resilience shown during pullbacks points to underlying confidence, with investors comfortable holding positions while the market consolidates. We expect the FBM KLCI to trade within 1,730–1,745 today,” he added.

Among heavyweight counters, Maybank and Tenaga Nasional fell 2.0 sen each to RM11.92 and RM13.96, IHH Healthcare slipped 1.0 sen to RM8.76, Public Bank rose 2.0 sen to RM4.92, while CIMB remained flat at RM8.52.

On the most active list, ACE Market debutant AmBest Group gained 8.0 sen to 33 sen, Zetrix AI and Gamuda eased 4.0 sen each to 65.5 sen and RM3.99, Top Glove dipped 0.5 sen to 57.5 sen, while MMAG was unchanged at 5.0 sen.

Top gainers included HI Mobility, up 10 sen to RM2.30, Malayan Cement, up 3.0 sen to RM8.25, Superlon, up 2.5 sen to 69.5 sen, and Karex and IJM Corporation, each rising 2.0 sen to 64 sen and RM2.82.

Leading decliners were Malaysian Pacific Industries, down 86 sen to RM31.14, Allianz Malaysia, down 82 sen to RM21.66, Dutch Lady Milk Industries, down 46 sen to RM33.00, Fraser & Neave, down 20 sen to RM33.68, and Tradeplus Shariah Gold Tracker, down 19 sen to RM5.91.

On the index board, the FBM Top 100 Index fell 39.54 points to 12,432.41, the FBM Emas Index lost 43.07 points to 12,601.35, the FBM Mid 70 Index dropped 112.04 points to 17,186.47, the FBM Emas Shariah Index shed 60.87 points to 12,064.45, and the FBM ACE Index erased 43.35 points to 4,591.0.

Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index declined 32.13 points to 21,441.91, the Industrial Products and Services Index edged down 0.76 of-a-point to 173.77, the Plantation Index fell 22.74 points to 8,319.64, and the Energy Index slipped 4.98 points to 735.67. — BERNAMA

Wall Street’s favorite trades collapse as market selloff deepens

ALL across Wall Street, day by day, the headlong rush into the most popular trades, from tech stocks to gold to cryptocurrencies, has given way to a sudden retreat from risk.

There’s been no single cause, like there was last April when President Donald Trump’s trade war sent markets into a fearful tailspin. Instead, it’s been a slow drumbeat of news that is sowing anxiety about valuations that many suspected had already run up too far — and causing investors to pull back all at once.

That was clear again on Thursday, when the S&P 500 slid 1.2%, its third straight daily decline, and the Nasdaq 100 extended its deepest slide since April. Software stocks extended their tumble after artificial-intelligence startup Anthropic rolled out a new model that’s designed to carry out financial research, the second time this week the company has jolted markets, underscoring the competitive threat from the new technology.

Silver — which had tracked gold to record highs — cratered 20%. Bitcoin dropped more than 13%, erasing all of the gains seen since Trump’s election 15 months ago, as investors unwound money-losing trades financed with borrowed money. US Treasuries rallied, resuming their usual role as a haven of last resort. And after the closing bell, Amazon.com Inc. plunged more than 11% when it said it plans to invest $200 billion this year, far more than the amount forecast by analysts who’ve grown increasingly concerned that tech companies are overspending on AI.

Those jitters spilled into Asia as markets opened, with South Korean stocks sinking over 5% at one point and chipmakers Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc. leading the slide. Shares across the region fell about 1% in early trading, while futures tied to the Nasdaq pointed to further losses ahead.

“People are definitely going more defensive,” said Brian Frank, president and portfolio manager at Frank Funds. “It’s more of like a shoot first and ask questions later type environment.”

 

The recent activity marks a strong shift from the mood on Wall Street heading into the year, when strategists were predicting that stocks were poised for the longest winning streak in nearly two decades. The forecasts rested on expectations that the AI boom would continue, the surprisingly resilient economy would keep bolstering corporate profits and that the Federal Reserve would dial down interest rates. 

That outlook remains largely in place, as evidenced by the solid earnings reports that have been rolling out in recent weeks. But there’s also been a renewed focus on some of the mounting risks: The companies that will be displaced by the AI boom; questions about the direction of the Fed if Trump’s pick, Kevin Warsh, is confirmed as Jerome Powell’s replacement as chair; and stretched valuations — on assets like gold, Bitcoin, or even tech giants like Alphabet Inc. — that may not be sustainable in the long run.

Fresh labor-market data also added to the pressure on markets Thursday. New figures from Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. showed companies announced the largest number of job cuts for any January since the depths of the Great Recession in 2009, adding to concerns that economic momentum may be starting to crack.

The reversal was most dramatic for Bitcoin. After a meteoric rise for much of last year as Trump’s victory set off a speculative rush into cryptocurrencies, the market for such tokens has tumbled sharply this month as investors yanked out cash.

On Thursday, the selloff in Bitcoin deepened as the trading day wore on, dragging down other tokens, exchange-traded funds and the treasury companies like Strategy Inc. that hold vast sums of coins. By late afternoon in New York, it had slumped 13% to just over $63,000, wiping out roughly half its value since it hit a record high four months ago.

“The fear and uncertainty across the market is evident,” said Chris Newhouse, head of business development at Ergonia.

In the stock market, the drop was more subdued. Yet the pressure was broad based, with nine of 11 major industry groups in the S&P 500 retreating. In addition to the worries about which companies will wind up on the losing end of AI technology, investors have been worried about whether the massive investments in the technology will wind up paying off. That was evident in the drop by Google’s parent, Alphabet, which slipped after outlining an ambitious spending plan even as revenue beat estimates.

Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners, said the recent retreat is a reflection of the worries that the hottest stocks and the other assets, like gold, had simply run-up too far and were due for a little reckoning.
