IPOH — The identities of all 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who were killed in a horrific crash at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik early this morning have been confirmed.

In a statement, UPSI’s Corporate Communications Division said the deceased included Sufea Adela Maslihaizan, 21, from Kampung Air Terjun, Jertih; Mohammad Aqil Taqiudin, 21, (Kampung Gong Bayor, Besut); Anis Soffiyya Md Zaidi, 20, (Kampung Rahmat, Chalok, Setiu); and Nur Ainul Qistina Mat Ali, 21, (Lorong Tapah, Kampung Anak Ikan, Jertih).

The others who died included Fakhrul Arif Rosdi, 20, from Kampung Kerandang, Jertih; Nurul Fatihah Abu Setaman, 22, (Kampung Gong Duek, Besut); Nur Dalila Farhana Mohamad Isma, 21, (Kampung Bharu Tok Dor, Jertih); Nurul Izyanti Muhamad Azahar, 21, (Kampung Padang Luas, Jertih); and Nur Amni Nadiah Nik Nor Zabir, 21, (Kampung Paya Rawa, Besut).

The statement also identified Muhammad Mustaqim Rosde, 21, (Kampung Telaga Nibong, Jertih); Nor Ayuni Maslan, 21, (Felda Tenang, Jertih); Nurly Sahirah Azman, 23, (Kampung Gong Pasir Kerandang, Besut); and Fatin Nasrien Fadli, 22, (Kampung Kerandang, Besut) as among those who perished.

The post-mortems for these victims were conducted at the Forensics Department of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) here.

Two other victims, whose post-mortems were carried out at Hospital Gerik, were Muhammad Adib Hazim Halim, 21, from Kampung Pasir Badak, Jertih; and Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad, 22, from Jalan Gong Maksom, Kampung Amer, Besut.

Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said that post-mortems for all the victims were completed this afternoon.

Meanwhile, a convoy of vans transporting the students’ remains began leaving the HRPB Forensics Department for Jertih, Terengganu, at around 8.55 pm.

It is understood that upon arrival in Jertih, the 13 bodies will be taken to Masjid Hadhari for prayers before being laid to rest in their respective village cemeteries.

The remains are being transported to Terengganu via the JRTB with escorts from the Perak and Kelantan police contingents.

The students were travelling in a chartered bus from Jertih to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, when it collided with a multi-purpose vehicle between 12.30 am and 1 am. — BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR — Seventeen hours after the fatal crash involving a bus carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students shocked the nation early today, post-mortem examinations on the 15 victims have been completed, with the identities of six individuals officially confirmed.

As of 5.30 pm today, the identified victims are Sufea Adela Maslihaizan, 21; Mohammad Aqil Taqiudin, 21; Anis Soffiyya Md Zaidi, 20; Nur Ainul Qistina Mat Ali, 21; Muhammad Adib Hazim Halim, 21; and Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad, 22.

The information was conveyed by Perak Police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin to reporters at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh, Perak, this evening.

Earlier, post-mortem procedures on the bodies of Muhammad Adib Hazim and Wan Nur Suhaila were conducted at Gerik Hospital, Hulu Perak, while the remaining 13 were examined at the HRPB Forensic Department.

Previously, Perak Health director Dr Feisul Idzwan Mustapha said three forensic teams were assigned to conduct the autopsies, which were expected to be completed by midnight due to the condition of the bodies and the identification process by the families.

The heartbreaking incident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Banun, near Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak, occurred between 12.30 am and 1 am, when a chartered bus carrying students from the UPSI Tanjung Malim campus overturned after reportedly hitting the rear of a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle (MPV).

The bus, carrying 42 students aged between 21 and 23 who were returning to campus after the Aidiladha break, had departed from Jertih, Terengganu, at 9 pm.

In a related development, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri assured that psychosocial support, counselling, and other necessary aid would be immediately provided to the families of the deceased.

She said officers from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) would be mobilised to assist the families, particularly in managing their emotional wellbeing and welfare needs.

Meanwhile, in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, the company that operated the bus involved in the crash denied allegations of using a lorry driver as a relief driver for the vehicle.

Syarikat Kenari Utara operations officer Mohd Nazri Nawi said the allegations were completely untrue as his company had conducted thorough checks before hiring the back-up driver, since the original driver was still on leave.

“We never appoint bus drivers haphazardly without screening. We admit the replacement driver was sourced from another bus company, but he has experience driving buses, including on long-distance routes… he is not a lorry driver, as alleged,” he told reporters at the Noreen Group Operations Office in Tunjong here today.

Even almost 20 hours after the tragedy, the nation remains in shock and saddened over what is regarded as one of the worst crashes involving a tour bus.

Condolences and prayers from Cabinet members, community leaders, and people from all walks of life continued to flood social media until this evening, with many also expressing hope that the victims’ families would remain strong during this difficult time.— BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR — The fatal bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in the early hours of this morning near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak has prompted the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to establish a special task force to investigate the tragic incident.

The task force, involving the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Road Transport Department (JPJ), Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and other relevant agencies, will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the police aim to complete the investigation report as soon as possible to prosecute those allegedly responsible for the crash.

The accident occurred at 1.10 am at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Banun, near Tasik Banding, when the chartered bus carrying UPSI students overturned after colliding with the rear of a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

The bus, carrying 42 students aged 21 to 23 returning to campus after the Aidiladha holidays, departed from Jerteh, Terengganu, at 9 pm last night.

Thirteen victims died at the scene, and two succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Post-mortems for 13 bodies are being conducted at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh, while two are at Gerik Hospital.

The MPV, carrying a family of four including two children, veered off the road, resulting in minor injuries.

Police have yet to identify all victims, including the 15 deceased, as post-mortem processes are ongoing, and are investigating technical aspects, human negligence, the driver’s records and also if the road’s dark, winding and downhill conditions contributed to the crash.

The Higher Education Ministry (KPT) will provide RM2,000 initial aid and RM1,000 disaster relief to victims’ families to ease the burden, including funeral arrangements.

The Terengganu government has also pledged immediate assistance to affected families, while the Perak government has announced a contribution of RM1,000 per victim to help next of kin who travelled to Perak for identification and funeral arrangements.

UPSI has also assigned a staff member to assist each family involved, ensuring their welfare is prioritised throughout the process.

Also, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Pertubuhan Amal Komuniti Besut (Amal Besut) from Terengganu, has dispatched hearses to Perak to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased.

The Works Ministry (KKR) has instructed the Public Works Department (JKR) to work with the road maintenance concessionaire to provide technical advice and expertise.

The tragedy has also drawn condolences from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, to the bereaved families.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and members of the Cabinet also conveyed their condolences and sympathies via their respective social media platforms.

In light of the incident, the Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) has proposed that the government establish a National Emergency Student Fund to provide immediate support for higher education students and their families in the event of such tragedies, including access to psychological treatment and recovery assistance.

This is not the first deadly bus accident involving driver-related factors. The most recent occurred on Dec 24, 2016, when 14 people were killed and 16 injured after an express bus plunged into a 20-foot ravine at KM137 of the North-South Expressway near Kampung Jayo, Muar in Johor.

The deadliest bus tragedy in Malaysia took place on Aug 21, 2013, when 37 people, including the driver, were killed and 16 others injured after a bus carrying 52 passengers plunged 60 metres into a ravine at KM3.6 of the Genting Highlands-Kuala Lumpur road. — BERNAMA

In a Facebook post shared on the King’s official page, Their Majesties conveyed deep sorrow over the tragedy and offered prayers that the bereaved families be granted strength, patience, and ease during this profoundly difficult time.

Their Majesties also prayed for the swift recovery of those who were injured and are currently receiving treatment.

The fatal crash occurred at 1.10 am at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, involving a chartered bus transporting UPSI students back to their campus in Tanjung Malim, and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that was traveling in the same direction, from Jeli, Kelantan to Gerik.

GERIK — Initial investigations by the police have revealed that the fatal bus accident which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, occurred when the bus hit the rear of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), believed to be a Perodua Alza, before overturning.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the bus was carrying 42 UPSI students, eight men and 32 women, aged between 21 and 23, all from the east coast.

He said the bus, which was registered in Kedah, had been privately chartered by the students and the group departed from Jertih, Terengganu at 9 pm on Sunday and was en route to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when the crash occurred at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Banun, Gerik, early this morning.

“This tragic accident has resulted in 15 fatalities. All the bodies are currently awaiting post-mortem. Thirteen of the deceased have been sent to Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital, while two others were taken to Gerik Hospital.

“Twenty-seven others – 23 women and four men – suffered injuries. The bus driver, aged 40, and his 54-year-old co-driver were also hurt in the incident,” Noor Hisam told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters today.

Noor Hisam said that the driver and passengers of the MPV, namely a couple aged 37 and 36, as well as their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were also injured and taken to Baling Hospital, Kedah, for treatment.

“Other than Baling Hospital, other injured victims were also taken to Gerik Hospital, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital and Taiping Hospital,” he said.

He said police could not release the official list of the victims yet as the post-mortem process is still ongoing.

He said detailed investigations are also being done, including from the technical aspects, human negligence, and past criminal records, with cooperation from all relevant agencies, namely the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) and the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute (MIROS).

“The road where the accident occurred is winding and downhill (hilly)…It was dark and had no lights except for the area near Tasik Banding, but it is still too early to draw any conclusions.

“The bus driver was also injured and we have not yet been able to record his statement,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR — The nation was shaken once again in the early hours today by a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).

The fatal crash occurred at 1.10 am at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, involving a chartered bus transporting UPSI students back to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that was traveling in the same direction, from Jeli, Kelantan to Gerik.

This heartbreaking tragedy comes less than a month after a fatal crash on May 13, which claimed the lives of nine members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) in Teluk Intan, Perak.

According to reports, the crash occurred when the bus rear-ended the Alza, causing the bus to overturn and the MPV to veer into a roadside ditch.

A total of 48 victims were accounted for, including 13 who perished at the scene and were taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh, and two others who succumbed to their injuries at Gerik Hospital.

Seven more victims were admitted to the red zone (critical condition), 20 to the yellow zone (semi-critical), and six to the green zone (minor injuries) at Gerik Hospital.

At press time, authorities have yet to release an official list of the deceased or injured victims.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, in a Facebook post, announced that UPSI has established an operations room and hotline.

Accommodation assistance for the victims’ families is also being coordinated with Ungku Omar Polytechnic in Ipoh and the Gerik Community College.

UPSI vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said that the university has assigned one staff member to each affected family to ensure that all next of kin receive appropriate assistance.

For the record, fatal bus accidents have plagued Malaysian roads for years.

On Dec 24, 2016, a total of 14 people were killed and 16 were injured when an express bus plunged 20 feet into a ravine at KM137 of the North-South Expressway near Kampung Jayo, Muar, Johor.

Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said two other bodies would undergo post-mortem at Gerik Hospital, where those injured in the crash are also being treated.

He added that the ministry is also coordinating accommodation assistance for the victims’ families, together with Ungku Omar Polytechnic, Ipoh and Gerik Community College.

“I am on the way to the Ipoh hospital to meet the victims’ families. I ask that we all pray for ease in our affairs and for all the families involved. May they be granted strength and patience.

“Insya-Allah, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and UPSI have deployed whatever form of aid to be given to all those involved. UPSi has also set up an operations room with a hotline,” he posted on his social media accounts.

He also confirmed, in the same post, that so far, 15 people from UPSI were killed in this morning’s crash.

Earlier, the Hulu Perak Civil Defence Force (APM) District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) said that at least 15 people were killed in the crash involving 48 people.

KUALA TERENGGANU — The Terengganu government will provide immediate assistance to the families of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students involved in the tragic crash between a bus and a multipurpose vehicle on the East–West Highway near Tasik Banding, Perak, early this morning.

State Education, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Human Capital Development Committee chairman Datuk Satiful Bahri Mamat said the aid would include welfare support, as well as counselling and psychosocial services for the families and friends of the victims.

“I have instructed all relevant departments and agencies to coordinate efforts with the university, hospitals and the Federal government to ensure that all victims and their families receive the necessary support,” he said in a statement today.

Satiful Bahri also extended his condolences on behalf of the state government to the families affected by the tragedy, which has claimed the lives of 15 students, many of them from Terengganu, who were on their way back to campus after the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays.

“They passed away on a noble journey, returning in pursuit of knowledge with sincere intentions. Their loss is deeply felt by their families, the community and the state.

“We call on the people of Terengganu and Malaysians at large to join us in praying that the souls of those who perished will be showered with mercy and placed among the martyrs and the righteous,” he said.

He also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and strength for the families affected by the tragedy.

Earlier this morning, the Hulu Perak Civil Defence Force confirmed in a statement that at least 15 people were killed when a bus carrying UPSI students collided with another vehicle on the East–West Highway in Banun, near Tasik Banding, approximately 57 kilometres from Gerik, Perak.

IPOH — Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) has confirmed that 42 of its students were on board the bus involved in the fatal collision with another vehicle along the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, early this morning.

The accident claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students.

The UPSI Corporate Communication Division, when contacted, said that 44 students were supposed to board the bus, but two of them did not.

It later issued a statement saying that it had received a preliminary report on the crash.

“UPSI is taking follow-up action on the matter. As such, we ask the UPSI staff and the public to pray that we be granted ease in our affairs,” it added.

It also stressed that UPSI is always concerned with the welfare of its students and will provide assistance and support to the next-of-kin of the crash victims.

The Corporate Communication Division added that UPSI has activated an operations room and any information can be channelled to it by contacting 05-450 7148 (office) or 019-571 9977 (hotline).

Meanwhile, seven of the crash victims are treated in the red zone, 20 in the yellow zone and six in the green zone of Gerik Hospital.

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (picture) has directed the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to coordinate appropriate assistance for the families of the victims involved in a tragic accident that claimed the lives of at least 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) early this morning.

He described the heartbreaking incident, one that unfortunately recurs too often, as a solemn reminder for everyone to exercise caution and avoid rushing to their destinations.

“Your lives are priceless and irreplaceable,” he said in a Facebook post today.

The Prime Minister and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, also extended their condolences to the families of the victims, praying that they find strength and resilience during this difficult time.

“Azizah and I are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the accident early this morning near Gerik, resulting in the loss of 15 students,” he added.

Reports confirm that a bus carrying UPSI students was involved in a collision with a multi-purpose vehicle on the East–West Highway at Banun, Gerik, causing the bus to overturn.

The bus was reportedly travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university’s campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. — BERNAMA
