MALAYSIANS could see savings of up to RM1,632 a year following the government’s move to defer toll rate hikes on 10 major highways throughout 2025.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the decision will ease the financial burden on highway users, especially daily commuters.
“For example, Class one users on the MEX Highway passing through the Putrajaya Toll Plaza will save RM6.8 per day for a round trip, compared to the new rates that would have been introduced under the concession agreement.
“If calculated over 20 working days a month, the savings would amount to RM136 monthly or RM1,632 annually — a significant amount for the people,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN–Pekan), who had asked about the implications for users if the toll hike freeze announced on July 23 had not been implemented.
The affected highways include the Cheras–Kajang Expressway (GRANDSAGA), KL–Kuala Selangor Expressway (Latar), New North Klang Straits Bypass (NNKSB), Senai–Desaru Expressway (SDE), East Coast Expressway Phase 2 (LPT2) and the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE).
Also impacted are the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS), Duta–Ulu Kelang Expressway (Duke), Maju Expressway (Mex) and Butterworth Outer Ring Road (LLB), though the LLB deferral only applies to Class five vehicles.
The original toll hikes — based on concession agreements — ranged between 50 sen and RM4.56, with increases of between 79% and 83%, depending on vehicle class.
“If these increases had not been postponed, they would have had a major impact on the public due to the large gap between the current and new rates. The government has decided to maintain existing rates for the wellbeing of users,” he said.
Nanta also mentioned that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to protect the people’s welfare while continuing to fulfil obligations to concession companies.
“This measure not only reduces the daily burden on the public, but also provides households with more balanced spending room amid challenging economic conditions,” he added.
