A TOTAL of 2,781 quality audits were conducted nationwide from Jan 1 to July 31 this year to monitor the performance of telecommunications services, particularly in rural areas.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) regularly audits service providers to ensure compliance with the Mandatory Standards for Quality of Service (MSQOS).
“Of this total, 1,684 cases of non-compliance with the MSQOS involved 815 locations overall,” she told the Dewan Rakyat today.
She was responding to Permatang Pauh MP Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan, who asked about enforcement and penalties against telecommunication companies (telcos) that fail to provide acceptable coverage.
Teo said of the 1,684 non-compliance issues, 462 have been resolved, while the remaining 1,222 are still under evaluation, involving upgrades to existing towers or new tower construction that require more time.
In 2024, MCMC had issued 268 Commission Directions under Section 51(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to compel providers to improve service quality at 219 locations.
“Service providers involved are required to carry out service quality improvements in the affected areas in accordance with the Commission Directions that have been issued,” she said.
Failure to comply with these directives is an offence under the act, which carries a fine of up to RM1 million, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both.
A separate financial penalty of up to RM500,000 may also be imposed under Section 105(5).
Consumers are encouraged to report poor network quality directly to telcos or through the MCMC complaint portal and the NEXUS mobile app.
