Dr Zaliha: Peaceful rally reflects Malaysia’s robust democracy

LABUAN — The recent “Turun Anwar” rally organised by the opposition in Kuala Lumpur was a strong testament to the resilience and maturity of Malaysia’s democratic landscape, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

She said the fact that thousands of people could gather peacefully to express their views underscored the strength of democratic principles.

“The peaceful gathering organised by the opposition showed that our democracy remains strong. Malaysians were exercising their rights within the bounds of the law, and that should be respected,” she told reporters after closing the Borneo Flora Festival 2025 here today.

Dr Zaliha emphasised that while differing political opinions are natural in a healthy democracy, what matters most is the ability of the public to voice concerns through peaceful and lawful means.

“This is the kind of political maturity we hope to continue nurturing, one that upholds public order while allowing citizens the freedom to express dissent,” she said. — BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR — A heated session unfolded in the Dewan Rakyat sitting today when Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) accused Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming of lying about the 20 tonnes of rubbish collected following Saturday’s rally.

Nga clarified that the figure was based on a report by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp).

He said that the government respects the Federal Constitution and upholds democratic principles by allowing peaceful assemblies, but such gatherings must be conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner, including maintaining cleanliness.

“This includes maintaining cleanliness, and I was criticising unhygienic behaviour. I never said the Honourable Member for Pendang was the one who littered.

“…the 20 tonnes of rubbish mentioned did not come from me. That figure was from the SWCorp report I received. Hundreds of our workers had to be mobilised to clean up the rubbish left behind after the black shirt rally,” he said.

Yesterday, Nga was reported as saying that a total of 20 tonnes of rubbish was collected following the rally, adding that cleanup operations were carried out until 3.30am.

Meanwhile, Nga said that to date, 23 non-sanitary landfills have been safely closed under the Non-Sanitary Landfill Closure and Rehabilitation Plan, adding that another 155 open dumping sites nationwide will be closed in phases throughout the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) period.

He said the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), through the National Solid Waste Management Department (JPSPN), is prioritising a progressive transformation from non-sanitary landfills to sanitary landfills equipped with leachate treatment plants, which function to treat the landfill liquid waste.

In addition, he stated that the ministry has introduced a reuse approach for closed landfill sites by conducting rehabilitation efforts to ensure they are safe before developing them into public spaces, such as Lestari Parks, solar farms, and community facilities, thereby benefiting the local community.

“One example of a successful Lestari Park pilot project is the former landfill site at Felda Bandar Tenggara, which had previously held over 360,000 metric tons of waste since 1999.

“Today, spanning 7.56 hectares, it has been transformed into a recreational park with a stroller garden concept, featuring attractively designed landscape elements as well as environmental rehabilitation components for the former landfill site,” he said.

He was responding to a question from Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) on the ministry’s actions to address issues of odour and water pollution frequently caused by poorly managed landfill sites. — BERNAMA

Police receive four reports over rally at Dataran Merdeka

KUALA LUMPUR — Police have received four reports in connection with the rally at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday, including one case involving an effigy resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim being caned near the National Mosque.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the remaining three reports were related to the use of drones.

He said that the effigy case has been referred to the Classified Crime Investigation Unit in Bukit Aman for investigation under Section 41 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“The three other reports related to drones have been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) for further action,” he said at a press conference here today.

Mohamed Usuf said that although the rally was held peacefully and with approval, police will still investigate any misconduct by rally-goers. — BERNAMA

Police: Rally ends peacefully without incident

KUALA LUMPUR — The rally at Dataran Merdeka today concluded peacefully without any untoward incident with about 18,000 individuals attending.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said they were grateful for the good cooperation shown by participants, who did not create any problems throughout the rally.

“Everything went smoothly, even though there were one or two things that might not have been agreed upon initially, but were resolved well,” he told reporters after the rally ended this evening.

He also advised the organisers to be more transparent in sharing information with the authorities in the future to ease security and logistic controls.

“Malaysians have the right to gather, and to gather peacefully. In terms of safety, that’s the most important. Sometimes if we don’t allow an event, it usually is due to a safety issue, as that is a responsibility of the police,” he said, adding that 3,000 police officers and personnel were mobilised to ensure safety throughout the duration of the rally.

Mohamed Usof also said the police would study the speeches delivered by several leaders at the rally, especially if there were elements touching on 3R (religion, race, royalty) or seditious in nature.

“The right to gather peacefully is there, but we are still bound by existing laws. If there are violations, action will be taken according to legal provisions,” he said, adding that there were over 60 reports lodged regarding the rally, mostly by those who disagreed with it being organised.

An internal postmortem to access aspects that could be improved would also be conducted, Mohamed Usof said. — BERNAMA
