PHYSICAL fighting will not be tolerated in Parliament, following an allegation that Pendang MP invited another member to fight during yesterday’s sitting.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said all parliamentary units, including the video and audio teams, have been instructed to provide evidence before a decision is made.
“If there is evidence showing that the act did indeed take place or that there was an attempt to attack, I will take firm action this time,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong, who called for firm action against Pendang MP, saying the incident — broadcast publicly — had set a bad example while the House was debating bullying.
Johari said MPs are free to speak and engage in heated debate, but using or threatening physical action crosses a red line.
“You can speak, I let you. I never even turn off your mics because I wanted to give you all a chance. I mean, you are all politicians, so speak.
“But when you use or attempt to use physical action, you have crossed the red line. But I don’t want to accuse anyone. I have directed all parties to conduct an investigation,” he said, adding the matter will be decided on Monday (Aug 18) after the investigation is completed.
Indera Mahkota MP Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah, who was in the chamber during the incident, said Johari had attempted to calm the situation and restore order.
He asked whether disruptive exchanges recorded would be deleted after the intervention.
Johari replied that proceedings are still recorded even when microphones are off because the chamber’s television feed continues running.
“MPs, be careful — you thought you had turned everything off, shouting, swearing — I could still hear because the TV recording is not turned off,” he said.
