KUCHING — The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has urged all companies and plantation operators in the state to immediately cease any open burning activities amid the ongoing hot and dry weather conditions.

Sarawak Deputy Premier and SDMC Chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas also reminded landowners to remain vigilant and to monitor their land and surrounding areas for any signs of fire.

“Members of the public are strongly advised to refrain from open burning and to report any such activities to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) via its hotline or nearest office.

“Your cooperation is vital to ensure public safety and to protect our environment during this critical period,” he said in a statement issued today.

Uggah noted that the region is currently experiencing a prolonged spell of dry and hot weather, significantly increasing the risk of fires – particularly in fire-prone areas such as the Mukah and Miri Divisions. 

He said that all Divisional Disaster Management Committees (DDMCs) have been instructed to activate and prepare their respective response teams.

“Emphasis must be placed on effective coordination in high-risk areas to ensure swift action in extinguishing fires and delivering water supplies to communities facing shortages.

“The Miri DDMC is specifically advised to regularly monitor and inspect water wells to prevent and suppress potential peat fires that may escalate during this period,” he said while adding that the NREB had cancelled all open burning permits effective two weeks ago. — BERNAMA
