A UNITED Parcel Service Inc. freighter jet with three crew members onboard crashed in a fiery accident shortly after takeoff on Tuesday from Louisville, Kentucky.
Video circulating on social media showed the jet struggling to get airborne, with one of its engines on fire, before exploding in a fireball beyond the end of the runway. A separate clip posted by local news station WLKY showed a large area of the ground on fire in the aftermath of the crash.
The aircraft was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 jet, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. The aircraft was headed to Honolulu, and crashed around 5:15 p.m. local time, the FAA said.
The incident adds to a deadly year for global aviation, including the recent crash of a cargo plane into the sea at Hong Kong International Airport, a fatal Air India 787 Dreamliner accident in June and the midair collision between a US Army helicopter and a regional jet in January.
The UPS crash also comes at a time of widespread air travel disruptions across the US caused by air traffic controller shortages since the US government shutdown began on Oct. 1.
The Louisville Metro Police Department said on the social media platform X that it and multiple other agencies were responding to reports of the plane crash and that injuries had been reported.
UPS said it had been notified of an accident involving one of its aircraft. Representatives for Boeing Co., which took over McDonnell Douglas in 1997, didn’t immediately comment. The package-delivery company said three crew were onboard.
Louisville’s Muhammad Ali airport is home to UPS’ main global hub, known as Worldport.
The situation is serious. Please pray for the families affected. I’m headed to Louisville now.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, and the NTSB will lead investigation, the FAA said. A spokesperson for the NTSB said the agency is gathering information on the crash.
Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 shows the 34-year-old aircraft reaching takeoff speeds and climbing to around 175 feet before plummeting to the ground.

Bloomberg couldn’t immediately verify the number of injuries.
The three-engine widebody jet, a stretch of the DC-10, was launched in 1986 but was eclipsed by more efficient twin-engine models like Boeing’s 777. UPS operated 27 of the type as of Sept. 30, according to a company filing, and is one of the biggest operator of MD-11s followed by rival FedEx Corp. –BLOOMBERG
