US State Secretary Marco Rubio affirms US’ cooperation with China, emphasising stable relations through regular engagement, with both sides reaffirming the need for constructive dialogue.
Commenting on his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday, he said it was “very constructive,” although it was not a formal negotiation.
“It’s important that the US and China have productive meetings and regular communication,” he told reporters after the sideline meetings at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
He further said such engagements were necessary to support global stability and could lay the groundwork for more consistent cooperation between the two powers.
Additionally, Rubio confirmed that President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation to visit China, with both countries now working to finalise the date.
Currently, US tariffs on Chinese imports averages about 55%, made up of a 10% base rate, a 20% surcharge linked to fentanyl measures, and a 25% trade penalty under Section 301.
Before 2025, average US tariffs were around 3%, and even during the 2018–2021 trade war, duties on Chinese goods only rose to about 19–20% under the Phase One deal signed in 2020.
