Tengku Zafrul: YTL Green Data Centre promotes Malaysia as AI hub

KUALA LUMPUR — The YTL Green Data Centre in Kulai, Johor has placed Malaysiaon the global map as an artificial intelligence (AI) hub and the AI Centre of Excellence in ASEAN, said Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

He said the data centre was the result of a strategic collaboration between YTL Power International Bhd and NVIDIA to develop AI infrastructure using green energy.

“This mega project worth RM10 billion will not only create Malaysia’s own large language model (LLM), but will also stimulate the growth of local talent and expertise and generate demand for high-tech positions such as data scientists and AI engineers,” he said in a post on his Facebook page.

According to Tengku Zafrul, YTL is one of five NVIDIA Cloud Partners along with other technology giants such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud.

JOHOR BAHRU — The RM2 billion gross development value (GDV) MBW Innexus Industrial City project is expected to create approximately 37,000 jobs across various skill levels, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

Its minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (picture), said the project marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s industrial journey and will generate long-term benefits for the nation’s workforce, businesses, and communities.

“Those 37,000 jobs are not just statistics, but opportunities that will uplift families and transform communities. MBW Innexus will expand Malaysia’s industrial base, support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and strengthen our regional competitiveness,” he said at the launch here today.

MBW Innexus Industrial City spans across 296 hectares of prime land in Tanjung Langsat, Johor Bahru. The development sits strategically within Flagship D of the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), positioning it in the so-called “Golden Triangle” of Southeast Asian industrial cooperation linking Tanjung Langsat, Pasir Gudang, and Singapore’s Jurong.

“This corridor is uniquely placed to become the region’s most connected industrial cluster, offering investors unrivalled cross-border supply chain integration,” Tengku Zafrul said.

He highlighted that the development will also benefit from JS-SEZ’s pilot policies designed to cut red tape and accelerate investor journeys in areas such as immigration, customs, investment approvals and talent mobility.

Tengku Zafrul noted that the project’s proximity to leading institutions, including Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, will also ensure a steady pipeline of skilled workers, while creating opportunities for collaboration between multinational corporations (MNCs) and local SMEs.

Tengku Zafrul added that the federal government, the Johor state government and the private sector have shown strong alignment in delivering the project, reflecting Malaysia’s commitment to being pro-business, pro-investment and pro-industry.

“Our message is simple: Malaysia is not only a safe place to invest, but a long-term partner for growth. Johor, with its strategic location and dynamic economy, is ready to anchor the next generation of industrial investments,” he said. — BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA – Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mengesahkan telah menerima nota bantahan daripada UMNO yang menyatakan bantahan terhadap bekas ahlinya menyertai parti lain dalam Kerajaan Perpaduan.

Nota itu muncul susulan Menteri Pelaburan, Perdagangan dan Industri, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, yang juga bekas ahli UMNO mengumumkan penerimaan Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) terhadap permohonan keahliannya.

Perdana Menteri berkata, beliau akan membuat semakan status surat itu dengan Setiausaha Agung PKR, Fuziah Salleh.

“Surat itu sudah lama (diterima). Saya kena semak dengan Setiausaha Agung,” katanya ringkas ketika ditemui pemberita selepas menghadiri Majlis Perhimpunan Kementerian Kewangan bersama Perdana Menteri di sini hari ini.

Tiga hari lalu, Ketua Penerangan PKR, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil mengesahkan bahawa parti komponen Pakatan Harapan (PH) itu telah menerima nota bantahan UMNO dan mesyuarat jawatankuasa pusat PKR akan membincangkan perkara itu pada akhir bulan ini.

Fahmi yang juga Jurucakap Kerajaan Perpaduan turut mengesahkan Setiausaha Agung PKR telah menerima dan memanjangkan surat itu kepada pimpinan parti.

Pada 13 Ogos lalu, Setiausaha Agung UMNO, Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki berkata, parti itu akan menyampaikan nota bantahan kepada pemimpin parti dalam Kerajaan Perpaduan yang sedang mempertimbangkan, atau sudah membenarkan, bekas ahli UMNO masuk ke dalam parti mereka.

Asyraf kemudian berkata bahawa nota bantahan itu mewakili ‘amaran keras’ kepada komponen Kerajaan Perpaduan yang lain, memberi amaran bahawa hubungan dalam gabungan boleh menjadi rumit jika perkara itu tidak ditangani dengan sewajarnya.

Sebelum ini, Fuziah mengesahkan bahawa Tengku Zafrul telah diterima sebagai ahli PKR dan parti itu telah meluluskan permohonan keahlian bekas ahli UMNO itu semasa mesyuarat jawatankuasa pimpinan pusat pada 26 Julai lalu. – KOSMO! ONLINE

Tengku Zafrul: US agricultural products tax exemption finalised based on mutual interest

KUALA LUMPUR — The sales tax exemption on imported United States (US) agricultural products is the result of negotiations finalised based on mutual interest, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz (picture).

He said the exemption was one of the discussion outcomes that had led to a tariff reduction against Malaysia.

“Therefore, any tax exemption consideration for other countries is subject to negotiations based on requests and counter-offers from the respective countries, provided that it brings benefits and advantages to Malaysia,” he said during the winding-up session of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) motion at the Dewan Rakyat sitting today.

Tengku Zafrul said the current trade situation is unprecedented in any country, and Malaysia is not alone in facing circumstances where multilateral trade principles have had to sideline the World Trade Organization (WTO) to protect the respective country’s economic and political interests.

According to him, the measures taken by the US aim to establish a new world trade order based on current geopolitical and geoeconomic agreements, while its compatibility with WTO rules depends on the specific design and implementation.

“MITI will comply with various international trade regulations currently in force, and the ministry will study this issue in more detail and will discuss the matter (discrimination) with the Finance Ministry,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said the government will continue to uphold the principles of fair and equitable trade without discrimination against any country, including trading partners with whom Malaysia has free trade agreements.

On the tariffs imposed on the rubber glove industry, Tengku Zafrul said the sector had already been impacted earlier due to higher production costs compared to other countries, particularly China, which has been actively investing post-COVID-19 pandemic.

The main issue faced is not just the implementation of tariffs, but also productivity, he said.

“Therefore, we need to look at this matter holistically, because even without tariffs, the competitiveness of the local industry is decreasing compared to neighboring countries that have increased investment in this sector,” he added. — BERNAMA

Tengku Zafrul says he will remain in politics after term ends in December

SINGAPORE — Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz (picture) has said he will remain in politics and continue serving the country in any capacity after his term ends in December.

Speaking at a Bursa Malaysia Invest Malaysia fireside chat session, he said that, for now, he has no concrete plans and will focus on his current responsibilities.

“I’ll stick to politics and see how I can help the government in any way, other than the position I’m in today,” he said during the session, which was moderated by Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad’l Mohamed, as part of the as part of the Macquarie ASEAN Conference held here, Monday.

At the same time, Tengku Zafrul, who is also President of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), stated that he has no intention of returning to the private sector.

Prior to his ministerial appointments, he spent over 22 years in the banking and financial services industry, including as Group CEO and Executive Director of CIMB Group Holdings Bhd, and as President Commissioner of PT Bank CIMB Niaga in Indonesia.

Tengku Zafrul was appointed to his current ministerial role in his capacity as a senator.He commenced his second and final term as a member of the Dewan Negara in December 2022, the maximum permitted under the rules. — BERNAMA
