Destini wins 18-month extension for Mindef aircraft spare parts contract

DESTINI Bhd has secured an 18-month extension from the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) for the supply of non-proprietary aircraft spare parts to the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

In a bourse filing today, the defence and aviation service provider said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Destini Prima Sdn Bhd, accepted the letter of award.

The contract, previously expiring on June 30, 2025, is now extended from July 1, 2025 until Dec 31, 2026.

The value of the contract remains unchanged at RM403.75 million, a combined ceiling shared with 29 other contractors. –TMR

Court sanctions non-compliance with FSRA summonses

TORONTO, Sept. 18, 2025 /CNW/ – Ontario’s financial services regulator, FSRA has obtained fines and orders against two unlicensed individuals who failed to comply with FSRA-issued summonses under the Insurance Act (Act).

The Divisional Court of Ontario has ordered Kostyantyn Poshtarenko (“Poshtarenko”) and Anatolii Stoliar (“Stoliar”) to attend for an interview and provide information to FSRA and imposed a fine of $5,000, plus $1,000 for each day they do not comply with the Court’s order, up to $25,000 total. The endorsement can be found on CanLii’s website.

“In order to protect consumers and maintain confidence in financial services, people must comply with FSRA investigations, and as we saw in this case, the courts support our enforcement efforts,” said Elissa Sinha, Director of Litigation and Enforcement at FSRA.

“Non-compliance with a FSRA summons will not be tolerated and can have serious consequences.”

FSRA issued summonses under the Act to Poshtarenko and Stoliar to attend to be interviewed and provide information regarding Poshtarenko engaging in unlicensed activity under the Act. When they each failed to comply with the summonses, FSRA applied to bring an application in the Divisional Court for a punishment.

On April 22, 2025, FSRA also imposed a $100,000 administrative penalty against Poshtarenko for acting as an insurance agent while not being licensed. Poshtarenko did not request a hearing before the Financial Services Tribunal.

Nvidia invests US$5b in Intel, plans to co-design chips

NVIDIA Corp. agreed to invest $5 billion in Intel Corp. and said the two will co-develop chips for PCs and data centers, a surprise move to help prop up an ailing archrival that sent Intel shares soaring.

Nvidia will buy Intel common stock at $23.28 per share, the two companies said on Thursday. Intel will use Nvidia’s graphics technology in upcoming PC chips and also provide its processors for data center products built around Nvidia hardware. The two companies didn’t offer a timeline for when the first parts will go on sale and said the announcement doesn’t affect their individual future plans.

The new funds for Intel come after the US government agreed in August to take a roughly 10% stake in and President Donald Trump took on the role of pitchman. Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp., which has committed to invest tens of billions into US chipmaking and cloud infrastructure, made a surprise $2 billion investment last month and Intel is also raising cash by selling assets to investors. Its current operations, hit by market share losses, cannot shoulder the burden of intensive spending associated with trying to build leading-edge semiconductors.

Intel’s stock surged by as much as 28% after markets opened in New York. On paper, the value of the US government’s stake has jumped more than 55% to $4.9 billion.

The tie-up between the two Santa Clara, California-based rivals underlines how the balance of power in the computer industry has shifted. Intel is getting a financial shot in the arm and access to market-leading technology from a company that it once relegated to a niche role on the industry’s fringes.

“This historic collaboration tightly couples Nvidia’s AI and accelerated computing stack with Intel’s CPUs and the vast x86 ecosystem — a fusion of two world-class platforms,” Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said in a statement. “Together, we will expand our ecosystems and lay the foundation for the next era of computing.”

Intel will offer PC chips that combine general-purpose processing with powerful graphics components from Nvidia, better helping it compete with Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which has been seizing market share in desktops and laptops. AMD’s stock fell as much as 5.9% on the news of Nvidia’s investment in Intel. Meanwhile, ASML Holding NV, the Dutch chipmaking equipment maker that counts Intel as a major customer, rose as much as 8.2% in Amsterdam.

AMD is also Nvidia’s closest competitor in graphics chips. The AI leader continues to evaluate whether to outsource production of its chips to Intel, but has no current plans to do so.

In data centers, where Nvidia’s artificial intelligence accelerators dominate and have pushed Intel and others to minor roles, Intel will provide its rival with processors for integration into some products. As Nvidia increasingly combines its AI chips into larger computing clusters, processors are required to handle the general tasks that its graphics semiconductors are not ideally suited to.

Nvidia currently designs its own processors – which work alongside the accelerator components – using technology from Arm Holdings Plc. Company representatives said its plans for in-house processors have not changed.

At Wednesday’s close, Intel had a market value of $116 billion, meaning Nvidia is taking a less than 5% stake. Nvidia has a market capitalization of more than $4 trillion.

Nvidia’s power to determine the future of the industry, and now Intel’s pragmatic attempt to work alongside it, is based on Nvidia’s utter dominance of AI computing. The company saw the need for new types of chips and software ahead of the debut of services such as ChatGPT from OpenAI and had them ready before any of its rivals. When the world’s biggest companies rushed to build data centers to make sure they could compete in the new era of computing, they turned to Nvidia’s chips.

As recently as 2022, Intel had more than twice as much revenue as Nvidia. The company that gave Silicon Valley its name dominated computing from laptops to data centers with its microprocessors. But it was slow to field the type of accelerator chip that Nvidia offers and has failed to garner meaningful market share in that area.

This year, Nvidia is on course for sales of about $200 billion, according to Wall Street estimates. At some point next year, it’ll be pulling in more revenue per quarter than Intel gets in a year. Its data center unit alone is bigger than any other chip company’s sales.

Intel’s failure to anticipate and exploit spending on AI-specific computing compounded the problems it was suffering from a loss of manufacturing leadership. For decades, Intel plants had the best manufacturing technology making its products better, even if others produced comparable designs.

Now it’s forced to turn to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to produce its best chips. TSMC’s rapid improvements in technology have enabled many companies – from Apple Inc. to Nvidia – to turn good designs into industry-leading products.

Under new leader Tan, brought in earlier this year to replace the ousted Pat Gelsinger, Intel has said it will pursue a more open approach, seeking out partnerships and opening its plants to rivals. –BLOOMBERG

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan deepen ties with mutual defense deal

SAUDIA Arabia and nuclear-armed Pakistan elevated their long-standing security partnership by signing a mutual defense pact, stating that “any aggression against either country shall be considered an aggression against both.”

The deal was signed on Wednesday between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was on a state visit to Riyadh, the kingdom’s capital.

The agreement is aimed at strengthening the two countries’ “joint deterrence against any aggression,” according to a joint statement. That could put Saudi Arabia in an awkward position with India, Pakistan’s biggest regional rival and a key destination for Saudi oil exports. Pakistan has fought three major wars with India, and hostilities between the two South Asian nations flared up as recently as May, when they launched drone, missile and artillery strikes across their shared border. Pakistan said it shot down six war planes during the conflict, while India said it lost an unspecified number of fighter aircraft.

India’s response to the signing of the defense deal was muted, with a foreign ministry spokesman saying in a post on X that the Indian “government was aware that this development, which formalizes a long-standing arrangement between the two countries, had been under consideration.”

“We will study the implications of this development for our national security as well as for regional and global stability. The government remains committed to protecting India’s national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security in all domains,“ the spokesperson said.

Pakistan has sought an active role in regional affairs since US President Donald Trump hosted the country’s Army Chief Asim Munir in June. Islamabad offered help mediating between Iran and Israel during their brief war earlier this year, and Pakistan’s prime minister visited Doha twice in the past week alone following Israeli strikes on that country.

“Pakistan hasn’t just signed a new mutual defense pact, it signed one with a close ally that’s also a top partner of India,” said Michael Kugelman, a South Asia analyst and non-resident fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. The agreement may not prevent future clashes with India, but it leaves Pakistan “in a very good place,” he said, as Islamabad now counts China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia among its key backers.

The kingdom has been investing in its ties with both countries.

Saudi Arabia agreed to agreed to boost energy ties and cooperate more closely on a wide range of industries, including defense, during a visit by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year.

The kingdom also lent Pakistan about $5 billion in loans and oil on deferred payments. Islamabad has provided military training for Saudi officers and the two countries have recently held joint military drills.

The deal with Riyadh might provide a boost for Pakistan’s efforts to sign similar agreements with other countries, Zahid Mehmood, a retired Pakistani major general, said on state-owned Pakistan Television.

The pact also comes after an Israeli strike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar’s capital Doha this month dealt a major blow to US-supported efforts to normalize ties between Gulf Arab nations and the Jewish state. –BLOOMBERG

Panasonic to debut next-gen solid state batteries for robots

PANASONIC Holdings Corp. will debut a sample batch of its new solid-state batteries during the fiscal year ending March 2027 as it seeks to crack the next-generation batteries market for robots and other systems.

Panasonic’s push is part of a broader industry effort for the mass production of power sources more efficient and safer than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries carry the potential to last longer and endure greater temperatures with a lower risk of leakage or combustion, owing to the absence of liquid electrolytes.

“We want to breach the market by establishing the possibilities of solid-state batteries,” Shoichiro Watanabe, chief technology officer of Panasonic Energy Co., said Thursday during an interview with Bloomberg News. It could take around two years for customers to assess their reliability, he added.

While its core product is the lithium ion battery, the Osaka-based electronics maker is working to improve the energy density and safety of its solid-state batteries. Panasonic, which is chasing small-battery leader TDK Corp., aims to leverage its experience making electric vehicle batteries to claim a bigger slice of this new market.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Idemitsu Kosan Co. previously announced plans to install the solid-state batteries they jointly developed in EVs in 2027 and 2028, while Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. have said they’re developing batteries to keep up with competition.

Mass-producing solid-state batteries for EVs is technically possible, Watanabe said. But it’s an industry with high price volatility, he added, and the priority should be to first realize their full potential.

The company is nearly ready to begin production of its 4680 lithium-ion batteries as it awaits final approval from clients, Watanabe said.

Panasonic had been requested by Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc. to speed up development its 4680 batteries. –BLOOMBERG

Hikers advised to exercise caution amid unpredictable weather

KUALA LUMPUR — Those engaging in hiking activities around the federal capital are urged to exercise caution and remain alert to current weather conditions.

Kuala Lumpur Police Internal Security and Public Order Department chief SAC Khalid Saion said unstable weather conditions could increase the risk of landslides or the water surge phenomenon in hilly areas frequented by hikers.

“Rain and thunderstorms pose a danger to all hikers. They are advised to stay alert and check weather conditions before undertaking hiking activities,” he told a press conference after a landslide simulation in Section 6, Wangsa Maju, here today.

Commenting on the exercise, Khalid said about 500 personnel were involved, including members from the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, and the Civil Defence Force.

He said the objective of the simulation was to strengthen coordination among all agencies involved in implementing National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) Directive No. 1 in the event of a disaster.

Khalid said the simulation, conducted from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm, also aimed to assess the readiness of participating agencies in terms of manpower and logistics.

“The simulation was successfully executed with all agencies. The response time, from the moment the emergency call was received until the first security team arrived at the scene, was swift and within the prescribed timeframe,” he said.

The hilly area in Section 6, Wangsa Maju, was chosen for the simulation following a 2022 landslide that affected five houses and 28 residents. –BERNAMA
