THE National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), through its Ziarah Kasih Simpan SSPN outreach programme, recently visited the family of the late Poovan Arumugam, a Simpan SSPN depositor, at their residence in Putrajaya.
Poovan, a government servant, passed away on June 25, 2025 at the age of 52.
During the visit, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir presented a letter and a mock card symbolising the takaful protection and death benefit under Simpan SSPN to Poovan’s next of kin.
Also present were PTPTN chairperson Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim; Secretary-General of the Higher Education Ministry Datuk Dr Anesee Ibrahim; PTPTN CEO Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid; Higher Education Leadership Academy director (AKPT) Dr Harshita Aini Haroon; PTPTN COO Mastura Mohd Khalid; and KL state PTPTN director Ahmad Shahril @Muhammad Ghazali.
Poovan was a Simpan SSPN Prime depositor, having opened accounts for himself and his three children. His savings qualified him for takaful protection benefits amounting to RM1,822.56, along with a death benefit of RM3,000, bringing the total benefits under Simpan SSPN Prime to RM4,822.56.
Additionally, he had opened Simpan SSPN Plus accounts for his children, namely the Topas Package with a monthly commitment of RM100 (RM90 savings + RM10 takaful contribution) for one child and the Delima Package, each with a monthly commitment of RM50 (RM40 savings + RM10 takaful contribution) for two children.
For a total monthly takaful contribution of RM30, Poovan was covered under Simpan SSPN Plus with takaful protection amounting to RM90,000 and a death benefit of RM9,000. This brought the total Simpan SSPN Plus benefits to RM99,000.
In total, Poovan’s family received RM103,822.56 in combined benefits under both Simpan SSPN Prime and Plus, offering significant financial relief during a difficult time.
PTPTN currently offers two main savings products:
-
Simpan SSPN Prime, which includes free Ringgit-to-Ringgit takaful protection for depositors with at least RM1,000 in savings in the event of death or total permanent disability.
It also offers up to RM8,000 in annual income tax relief, matching grants of up to RM10,000 per family for eligible recipients, competitive dividends, Shariah compliance, and government-guaranteed savings. -
Simpan SSPN Plus, which offers six packages ranging from RM30 (Intan) to RM500 (Berlian) monthly.
It includes additional takaful benefits up to RM1.2 million, death benefits for depositors, spouses, and up to five children, critical illness coverage, hospitalisation allowance, and coverage up to age 69—subject to the selected package and the takaful operator.
No medical check-up is required for account opening except for the Berlian package, which only requires the completion of three health-related questions. — TMR
