Masteel teams up with Kelington and Utar to advance carbon capture for green steel

MALAYSIA Steel Works (KL) Bhd has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kelington Group and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) to explore carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technologies aimed at reducing emissions from its steel operations.

The feasibility study will assess CO₂ capture methods and explore storage or reuse options.

Masteel, which holds top ESG ratings and has invested RM300 million in sustainability upgrades, aims to be Malaysia’s first net-zero steel mill by 2050.

The collaboration supports national climate goals and opens potential for verified carbon unit (VCU) trading in the Voluntary Carbon Market. — TMR
