MINISTER of International Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz announced his resignation as UMNO Supreme Council member, Kota Raja UMNO Division Chief and an UMNO member.
He said he had sought advice and views from his friends from within and outside the party, as well as UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and intends to join PKR.
“Finally, this decision was made after self-reflection and taking into account various factors, especially compatibility and suitability.
“At the same time, I have expressed my intention to join PKR to the president and secretary general of PKR.
“I will follow the usual application process to become a member of the PKR,” he said in a statement on his social media today.
Tengku Zafrul also thanked his supporters and UMNO members during his time there.
The senator is set to end his senatorship in December this year after serving in three governments over two terms.
He contested in Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in the last general election but lost to Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate, the current Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
There were talks that Tengku Zafrul was being considered as the new Selangor Mentri Besar, should the current one — PKR VP Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari — be appointed to the federal Cabinet.
He was also mentioned as a potential candidate for the US ambassadorship, succeeding Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz. –TMR
