AI to drive Malaysia’s smart city transformation

by AKMAR ANNUAR

ARTIFICIAL intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly critical role in modernising urban infrastructure and enhancing quality of life as Malaysia accelerates its smart city development agenda.

Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong visited the Kuala Lumpur Command and Control Centre (KLCCC) on May 19, 2025, as part of efforts to promote the adoption of digital technologies such as AI and 5G nationwide.

“AI does not just improve the efficiency of city management — it also directly contributes to raising the quality of life for city dwellers,” he said during the visit.

The KLCCC, operated by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), uses advanced digital systems to oversee and optimise real-time urban operations ranging from traffic control to emergency response.

Two of its key features are the Digital Twin model — a real-time virtual simulation of the city for urban planning and disaster management — and an AI-powered traffic management system that detects incidents and improves traffic flow.

“These technologies help reduce congestion and enhance road safety, especially in high-density areas,” he added.

To further strengthen Malaysia’s smart city ecosystem, the ministry, together with Malaysia Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) and Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), will co-host the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur (SCEKL 2025) from Sept 17 to 19, 2025.

The expo will serve as a key platform to showcase the country’s smart city achievements and aspirations, while also facilitating cross-sector collaboration in areas such as AI, Internet of Things (IoT) and digital public services.

DNB reported that 5G network coverage has surpassed 82% nationwide, creating a solid foundation for wider AI implementation across urban and rural settings.

Meanwhile, MDEC reiterated its commitment to making Malaysia a regional leader in smart city innovation and digital transformation, with strategic initiatives focused on future technologies like AI and 5G.

Also present during the visit were the Digital Ministry’s secretary general and senior officials from related agencies.
