THE government has announced a further reduction in the price of imported white rice (Beras Putih Import or BPI) to RM2,600 per metric tonne, effective May 15, in a move to stabilise supply and ease the cost of living.
The decision follows engagement sessions between the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) and national rice importer Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas), taking into account current global market developments and the need to maintain a resilient food supply chain.
This marks the second price revision since Dec 1 last year, when the price of BPI was reduced from RM3,000 to RM2,800 per metric tonne.
The federal government’s subsidy programme for BPI in Sabah and Sarawak will continue as usual.
KPKM Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said this initiative clearly reflects the government’s continuous commitment, based on the principles of care and people’s wellbeing.
“The move was made possible by Bernas’ strategic approach to diversify its rice imports from multiple countries, including Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar, reducing dependence on a single market,” he said in a statement.
He added that KPKM will continue to monitor market conditions to ensure food policies remain grounded in public interest and national food security.
